EQ Premium Cigars Maduro Cigar Review

You may have seen EQ Premium Cigars on social media lately and wondered what is the deal with this small boutique company owned by Henry Cruz. They are based out of the Dominican Republic and their cigars are manufactured at Tabacalera El Hoyito. Sadly, the brand is not currently distributed in the US but you can contact the French distributor, Yannick G Forel, through his Burning Desires Cigars Facebook group if you are interested.

For today’s review, I sampled the EQ Premium Cigars maduro which I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press. The maduro blend is described as:

  • Wrapper – San Andres
  • Binder – Dominican
  • Filler – Nicaragua,  Seco Cuban Ligero, Cuban Criollo 98
The EQ Premium Cigars Maduro is available in 4 vitolas:
  • Robusto
  • Churchill
  • Toro
  • Torpedo
I sampled two of the EQ Premium Cigars maduro Robustos for this review.

Pre-Light Examination

The EQ Premium Cigars maduro is a dark and rugged looking cigar with some noticeable veins running through the wrapper leaf. It is solid in the hand with a tight packing.

The cigar is adorned with a single band that uses a black, red, and gold motif. The golden letters EQ are centered in the middle of a bright red background and looking closer you will note he letter “Q” is designed as a tobacco leaf. The phrase “Premium Cigars” is printed on the bottom of the band.

Running the cigar across the nose, the foot exudes pre-light notes of tea and cocoa while the barrel had a sweet fermented leaf aroma.

Once I sliced the cap, the cold draw had a decent restriction to it and the palate was graced with notes of musty earth and pepper.

  • Pepper hits the nasals on retro off the initial light
  • Buttery and fruit notes entice the palate
  • Bitter coffee bean joins the mix
  • Light grey ash evolves
  • Thin char line
  • Light spice lays in the back
  • Full volume of creamy smoke
  • Mix of mineral and spice going into second third
  • Sweetness and cedar blends in
  • More earth and spice into second third
  • Coffee note smooths out to more of an espresso
  • Floral aroma
  • Dry cocoa at the finish
  • Lingering nut in the palate
  • Medium Strength
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 10 minutes

Overall, the EQ Premium Cigars maduro was a flavorful and pleasant smoking experience. The smoke was creamy in texture and the burn was mostly perfect from foot to nub. This is a cigar that would pair well with a sweet cup of espresso or an aged dark rum.

  • A great review on a cigar that I have had some time ago and recently finished the last vitola on my EQ empty box. Henry Cruz is a very dedicated young man with the productions of his blends. I was told it is being sold in Chicago, Illinois by a mutual friend of mine. This EQ Cigar reminds me like tasting Sushi for the first time and then finding yourself wanting more of it. That reminds me to order another EQ Cigars. Blessings. :).
