Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Cigar Review – Let the Sun Shine Through

At this years Smoke Inn Great Smoke 2018 I received two Perdomo 20th Anniversary cigars. One of those was the 20th Anniversary Sun Grown which is the topic of today’s review. Both 20th Anniversary cigars were released in time for the 2012 IPCPR to commemorate the company’s 20 years in the business, so this cigar has been around for a few years.

The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown is a cigar that uses sun grown Nicaraguan wrapper leaf that is carefully select and aged 6 years. If that was not enough, Perdomo adds the leaf to bourbon barrels for an additional 14 months of aging. This process produces flavors and color that are unique to this cigar. The leaf used in this cigar is grown on the Perdomo farms in Esteli, Condega and Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua and is a true Nicaraguan puro.

The blend is simply described as:

  • Wrapper –  Nicaraguan Sun Grown
  • Binder – Nicaraguan
  • Filler – Nicaraguan

They are available in 6 vitolas and come packaged in 24-count polished wood boxes:

  • Churchill C756 – 7 x 56 (MSRP $10.50)
  • Epicure E656 – 6 x 56 (MSRP $9.00)
  • Gordo G660 – 6 x 60 (MSRP $10.00)
  • Robusto R556 – 5 x 56 (MSRP $8.50)
  • Torpedo – 6.5 x 54 (MSRP $9.50)
  • Corona Grande – 6.5 x 48 (MSRP 8.25)

For this review I sampled the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Gordo G660.

Pre-Light Review

The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown is a soft box pressed cigar that sports a glistening and lightly marbled, medium tan, wrapper. The wrapper is silky smooth and the cigar is neatly finished with a double cap.

A single large band adorns the cigar that includes the Perdomo logo on top and the golden phrase “20th Anniversary” printed on a black background on the bottom. You know this is the Sun Grown variety by the red color below the logo.

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun GrownRunning the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown across the nose I picked up a sweet wrapper and cocoa, hay, and fruit notes off the foot.

I used a punch to open this up, so I would get a more concentrated smoke on the palate. But before lighting it up, I gave it some cold draw puffs that offered a nice restriction and notes of light pepper on the lips and tongue with a touch of earth on the palate.

Ignition was easy with my 4 flame Perdomo lighter which I have had for close to 5 years which is heavy enough to double as a weapon in my hand…

  • Right off the light, the early puffs open my nasals with some light pepper
  • The pepper grows on the nose as it burns through the first half-inch
  • A flaky medium grey ash develops with a medium char line
  • The spice blends into a cedar back note moving through the first third
  • I tapped the ash near end of first third
  • The burn cone was centered but had an inward burn to it – a touch of flame corrects it
  • Smoke smooths out well into the second third
  • A spicy nut aroma fills the lounge
  • Coffee and cream notes enter
  • Spice re-enters in at the midway point
  • Hint of dried fruit joins the profile at the end of the second third
  • Strength cranked up moving into the final third
  • A delightful tobacco sweetness completes the journey
  • Strength was mild to medium most of the burn but moved more toward full at the end
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 20 minutes

Overall, the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Cigar was pleasant cigar that delivered a solid core of cedar along with enticing flavor nuances throughout the burn. The burn was mostly pristine with the only exception of the small inward burn early on which was easily corrected with a touch up. Be careful of the strength in the final third as is seriously cranks up and awakens your senses.  This is a perfect mid afternoon cigar to enjoy with a glass of iced tea or cup of sweet coffee.

  • Hi Jimmy,
I smoked both of them and they were much better than I anticipated. Your review of the sungrown is spot on except I did not have the burn issue.
