Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican Cigar Review – Just when you thought good cigars are too expensive

LAst year at the IPCPR in Las Vegas, I picked up a Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican cigar from the United Cigar booth. In case you may not have heard of the United Cigar Group they are the company that brought us the highly acclaimed,  actually 100-rated ,  cigar the Atabey cigar. The Dos Hombres brand is actually an older brand that the company re-introduced in 2017 and did it in a bold way. They offered a very retailer-friendly offer that provided each retailer bonus goods in quantities that correspond to their state’s tobacco tax percentage, essentially “giving back” the tax to the retailer. In a press release, Oliver Nivaud, Director of Sales for United Cigars stated:

“We cannot stand idle as multiple states are being individually taxed heavier than others. We want to ‘level the playing field’ for retailers to compete against other states and online tobacco giants.”

The company also priced this cigar to retail between $5.00-$5.89. So we have to think, what do you get for less than six bucks? Rad on and you will find out.

The blend of the Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican is described as a Dominican Puro:

  • Wrapper – Dominican Republic
  • Binder – Dominican Republic
  • Filler – Dominican Republic

They come in 6 different vitolas packaged in 20-count boxes:

  • Robusto -5 x 50 (MSRP $5.00)
  • Toro – 6 x 50 (MSRP $5.49)
  • Gordo – 6 x 60 (MSRP $5.89)
  • Londsdale  – 6.5 x 44 (MSRP $5.00)
  • Churchill -7 x 50 (MSRP $5.69
  • Presidente – 8.5 x 52 (MSRP $5.89)

They all available at Two Guys Smoke Shop in Nashua, NH and on their website.

For this review, I sampled the Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican Robusto as my first cigar of the day on the Stogie Press patio as the sun rose on clear spring morning. The cigar has been resting in my humidor for 9 months.

Pre-Light Examination

The Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican is a silky smooth light tan cigar. There are minimal veins on the wrapper and the cigar is solid to the touch. It is finished with a well applied double cap and the seams are fairly tight those noticeable.

There is a single band that adorns the cigar which shows two cigar smoking men (Dos Hombres). The phrase “Est. 1932” is printed below  along with “Premium Cigars”.

Running it across the nose, I got an absence of aroma along the barrel and picked up a rich hay note off the foot.

I slice the cap and the cold draw had a decent restriction and offered notes of natural tobacco sweetness and a peppery spice that grew on the back of the palate.

Well  the preliminary was pretty damn good for a $5.00 cigar. Let’s see what more we get as I fire it up!

Cigar Review  Notes

  • Early peppery burn right off the initial light
  • Fruity-floral aroma wafts off the foot
  • Natural tobacco sweetness begins to take control
  • Ash is solid white resting on a thick char line
  • Smoke production is full with a perfect draw
  • Mineral notes enter as pepper lingers on the lips
  • Ash fell gently after first third – a perfect burn cone bud is revealed
  • A hint of nut joins in start of second third
  • Creamy and full smoke
  • Cedar notes begin to evolve
  • There is also a dryness to the smoke – not leather or fruit but just a tannin dryness midway
  • Citrus peel enters near end of second third
  • Buttery notes round out the flavor moving into the final third
  • More enhanced floral aroma
  • Nice increase of spice in the final
  • Mild strength
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 20 minutes

Overall, the Dos Hombres Cabinet Dominican was am excellent example of what you can get for $5.00. In fact this cigar could very well  be priced higher as the flavors were pleasant and the burn was outstanding. This was a great cigar to start the day and at this price it is one I would suggest trying.
