Kristoff Cameroon Cigar Review

The other day I was going clicking through Stogie Press and realized there is now over 1,000 cigar reviews and articles that have been authored since our launch back in 2014. That’s a lot of content and a lot of cigars that have gone from beauty to ash. One of the first reviews I authored was on the Kristoff Galerones Series DR4 Toro. I then noticed I have not reviewed a Kristoff cigar since June of 2017, so today I want to fix that and review the Kristoff Cameroon which I received at the Smoke Inn Great Smoke event this year.

The Kristoff Cameroon was first introduced at the 2015 IPCPR in New Orleans and is described by the company as:

“a smooth medium-full bodied cigar with intriguing notes of nutmeg, spice, almond, cinnamon and sweet cedar finish”

The blend is a trio of country leaf that is characterized as:

  • Wrapper – African Cameroon (Aged 7 years)
  • Binder – Dominican Habano Seed
  • Filler – Nicaraguan Habano Seed, Dominican Habano Seed

The Kristoff Cameroon line includes three vitolas each of which are packaged in 20-count boxes with the cigars laid into a bed of loose cigar leaf.

  • Churchill – 7 x 50 (MSRP $9.60)
  • Matador – 6.5 x 56 (MSRP $10.16)
  • Robusto – 5.5 x 54(MSRP $9.16)

If your local brick and mortar does not carry these, they can be easily found on the many popular on-line sites with a decent discount.

For this review I sampled the Kristoff Cameroon Matador.

Pre-light Examination

The Kristoff Cameroon is a beautifully constructed cigar with a smooth, milk chocolate-brown wrapper, that has a wonderful sheen to it.  A pigtail cap and a closed foot finishes the presentation. There are minimal veins running through the wrapper and the light tooth is visible. The seams are tight and the cigar is rock solid cigar from head to foot.

A single band adorns the cigar that boldly states “Kristoff Cameroon” in white on a sea of blue background. Across the top the phrase “Elite Cuban Taste” in printed in gold.

Kristoff CameroonRunning the Kristoff Cameroon across the nose you will pick up a sweet fruit and cocoa set of notes along the barrel and a fruit note off the foot.

Using my Palio double blade cutter I sliced the pig tail off to give it just a slight opening. I suppose I could have bitten the tail off too to get the same opening. The cold draw was nicely restricted and offers notes of light pepper and fruit.

With the preliminary exam out-of-the-way, it was time once more to turn a cigar to ash and add it to the eternal list of reviews on Stogie Press.

  • Pepper slap to the nose right of the initial light
  • The early heat already has the wrapper glistening
  • Pepper settles after about a half an inch and opens up to cedar and fruit
  • There is a delightful sweet fruit and nut aroma
  • A bright white ash develops resting on a medium and straight char line
  • Lots of oiling on wrapper
  • Coffee and spice fill out the profile after an inch
  • Leather and some sweetness moving in along with a hint of mint
  • Had to tap the ash early as my puff rate slowed and needed to light it up again
  • The burn cone was well centered and flat
  • Smoke is creamy
  • Sweetness increases through second third
  • Spice enters midway through second third and continues into the final third
  • Sweet cedar re-emerges down to the nub
  • Medium in Strength
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 15 minutes

Overall, the Kristoff Cameroon was a smooth and delightful cigar, with a creamy smoke, filled with notes of cedar, coffee, fruit, nut, spice and sweetness. I especially enjoyed the gentle mint that appeared early in the burn even though it lasted only a short time. This a great mid-afternoon cigar in my mind that would pair well with a sweet coffee or even a cream soda.
