Patoro Brasil Belicoso – Rough Cut Cigar Review

Patoro Cigars Brasil

Patoro Cigars founded by Patrik J. Martin and Dr. Pablo Richard is a company that prides itself on bringing to the market some of the finest cigars available. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Richard at the 2015 IPCPR in New Orleans and his passion for quality cigars shined during our conversation. Their website points out:

Of particular pride are the rare Patoro wrappers – extremely delicate, of a selected, unmistakable and exquisite tobacco mixture, only reaches by using three to ten year old tobacco, fermented up to four times.

Today I have the pleasure to bring you the review of  the Patoro Brasil which gets its name from the wrapper Cubra. Patoro cigars further explains:

The Cubra tobacco is a hybrid of Cuban and Brazilian tobacco seeds, which is cultivated in passionate devotion and with the utmost care by experienced Tabaceros. Elegant and exotic, this cigar will give any aficionado a unique smoke pleasure!

The Patoro Brasil was introduced in 2015 but made its US debut at the 2016 IPCPR. They are being distributed by CLE Cigars and is available in 3 vitolas, each packaged in 20 count boxes:

  • Belicoso (6 x 50) MSRP $14.00
  • Gordo (5.5 x 58)  MSRP  $16.00
  • Gordito (4 x 58)  MSRP $12.00

This beautiful cigar is a blend of:

  • Wrapper: Brazil (Cubra)
  • Filler: Dominican  Republic
  • Binder: Dominican  Republic

For this review I sampled the Patoro Brasil Belicoso

For those that are new to cigars I should point out that there is a difference between a Belicoso and a Torpedo. If you look at them you will notice the difference in the taper on the head. The Belicoso does not taper until it is very close to the head, whereas the Torpedo has a longer taper and comes to more of a point. They are both known as figurado shaped cigars.

Cigar Review Notes

  • Band is simple, Dark Green in color representing Brazil
  • Silky smooth, medium brown wrapper, with a visible sheen to it
  • Fresh sweet tobacco aroma along the barrel
  • Foot has a barnyard aroma
  • Solid feel in the hand
  • Cut to give a 1/4 inch opening to start
  • Cold draw offers some earth and tinge of pepper
  • Coffee and cream starts the fun
  • Quick oiling of the wrapper
  • Sweetness joins in
  • Light grey to white ash on medium char line
  • The ash held on for almost two inches and developed a slight curve
  • An orange zest is teasing  the tounge
  • A roasted chestnut like flavor start of second third
  • Sweetness continues through second third with a medium level of spice on the nose
  • Spice builds with a nut and cedar background through the finish

Overall, the Patoro Cigars Brasil was delicious cigar with fairly solid burn and offering some interesting flavor notes including the orange zest and chestnut. I would say it had a delectable complexity in flavor. I am hard pressed to think of what I would pair this with, perhaps my readers can offer a suggestion.
