Victor Calvo Cincuenta – Rough Cut Cigar Review

Another new blend introduced at this years IPCPR by Victor Calvo was the Cincuenta or as it is banded the VC50. Cincuenta translates to “50” in Spanish. Though the company was founded in 1996, the Victor Calvo Cincuenta is a dedication to his family and their legacy in the cigar business. Victor has been working on this for a few years, and if you talk to him, he will tell you it is his pride and joy.

Victor Calvo V50

The Victor Calvo Cincuenta features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper farmed exclusively for the blend.

The Victor Calvo website goes on to state:

…this unique cigar is an elegant and traditional smoke. This choice blend is cultivated with the perfect percentage of Ligero, bunched and bound by the most unique Habano desflorado in the tobacco industry.

For those that don’t know, deflorado (deflowering) is a growing technique where the flowers on the tobacco plant are removed once they have been pollinated. This produces a stronger leaf because all the nutrients and sugar work their way into the leaf.

The company describes the Victor Calvo Cincuenta multi-country blend as:

  • Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sun Grown Sumatra
  • Binder: United States
  • Filler: Dominican and Nicaragua

  • Corona (5 5/8 x 46)
  • Cañonazo  (5 5/8 x 52)

  • Wow nice prefigured aroma baking spice on the foot fermented leaf along the barrel
  • Beautiful primary band finished with a red satin footer
  • Oval press
  • Beautiful satin seamless veinless wrapper
  • Slight sheen to wrapper
  • Can’t place the note on the cold draw – some kind of exotic spice
  • Ok, I knew this would be a great start
  • No heavy pepper on this
  • Early notes of coffee, cocoa and vanilla
  • Slow burner
  • Very smooth burn
  • Well formed medium grey ash
  • Sweetness develops
  • Mild to Medium strength so far
  • Touch of light citrus
  • Background of cooking spice building
  • Mint enters start of second third
  • Nice ash developing
  • Cedar moves in half way
  • The amazing ash fell half way
  • Aroma develops a nutcomponent
  • Spice builds in the final third wrapped in nut with a long cedar finish
  • Ends at a solid medium in strength

Overall, the Victor Calvo Cincuenta was an outstanding cigar with impeccable burn qualities and delicious flavor complexities. Lasting around 90 minutes of smoking time, this is truly my favorite Victor Calvo cigar to date, I can understand why it is the “Pride and Joy” of Victor Calvo himself. This certainly makes the Stogie Press top 25 of 2016.
