Wilson Adams Sumatra Corona Gorda – Cigar Review

It was a good weekend of football, the Cowboys lost and the Patriots won a squeaker. So I figured that now that dinner is done and the family is resting in from of the tube, I would retire to the Stogie Press Smoking Lounge and sample a Wilson Adams Sumatra Corona Gorda. For those that are not familiar with Wilson Adams, they are a brand based out of Redlands, CA. Founded by Brandon K. Wilson and and Stephen Miller they embarked on a journey like many new brands to produce an enjoyable brand of cigars. Their website states:

Brandon traveled to Estelí where he visited the Plasencia family and another great friendship was formed. Brandon had realized his unbridled passion for tobacco and left the golf industry … Brandon and Stephen came together to pursue their collective dream of making great cigars and sharing them with the world, and the Wilson Adams Cigar Company was born.

The Wilson and Adams line of cigars currently include two blends – the “Habano” and the “Sumatra”. Today I sampled the Sumatra Blend which according to the website comes in 3 vitolas – but I received a Corona Gordo from them at this years IPCPR and that is the one I am sampling.

  • No.2 – 5×50 (Robusto)
  • No.4 – 6×52 (Toro)
  • No.7– 6×60 (Gordo)

The Wilson Adams Sumatra is wrapped in a  beautiful medium brown, satin smooth, Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper finished with a well applied  triple cap. It contains Nicaraguan filler and a Pennsylvania Broadleaf binder. Examining it you will notice that the wrapper is limited in veins and has tight seams. There was a sweet tobacco scent on on the barrel and foot.

The band is rather plain but not void of design it is red, white, and gold. Proudly displaying Wilson and Adams. The center has a gold and white “W” that has the A in white – a clever design.

After clipping the cap and toasting the foot I am greeted with a dry cocoa flavor on the front. It is like the cocoa powder my wife makes those chocolate brownies I love so much with. No not those Brownies – we don’t live in Colorado.

The ash on the Wilson Adams Sumatra is tight and light grey and the burn is fairly sharp. There is no bite or spice to this stick, it is just a pleasurable Corona.

Burning into the first third the is some tongue tingling smoke coming in. Like when you drink seltzer water. it is developing a very fine ash for a small stick and that pleases me on the construction front. They did a great job rolling this cigar, but of course I would expect nothing less from the Plasencia  factory.

As it progressed into the 2nd third there was an orange peel flavor coming in. A touch of bitter citrus. Pairing this with some Hennessy cognac it brought out a delightful palate sensation. The smoke is a medium body and the draw has been perfect.

The ash finally fell at half way point which i consider admirable for a corona vitola. As the Wilson Adams Sumatra got into the middle of the second third the flavors persisted but there is a whipped cream flavor coming in. Providing a sweetness to the profile as the ash picked up where it fell and started right back up holding strong. The burn line has been awesome throughout requiring no touch-ups.

The final third offered up some pepper that joined the mix – not overpowering but taking over where the bitter orange peal dropped off. The aroma shifted to a sweet caramel that filled the air.

Yes it was a good weekend and the Wilson Adams Sumatra was a very nice cigar. It is one I would recommend to a novice smoker to try  if they want a little more flavor and not a lot of strength. It is a good mid afternoon cigar.
