Cigar Review: Providencia Cigars Detox Toro – Rated 93

This past year, the little cigar company from Texas, Providencia Cigars, came out with a line of cigars to celebrate the 1980’s, a time when life was full of fun, excitement, indulgence, and well… some crazy times for those that remember it.

One of the blends in that collection is called the Detox and it is the subject of today’s review. Yes, the 1980s was a time for many to need a little detox as the over indulgence sometimes lingered a bit more than we expected, but that is another story. Today. let’s try to focus on the cigar.

The Providencia Detox is expressed in a single (6 x 52) Box Pressed Toro with an MSRP of $9.99 and I know it is available at the Undergound Cigar Shop and Lounge in Fort Worth, TX. This limited production cigar is available in singles not boxes.

Providencia Cigars describes the blend as:

  • Wrapper – San Andres
  • Binder – Nicaraguan
  • Filler – Nicaraguan (Ometepe)

For this review, I sampled two of the Detox toros that I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Providencia Cigars Detox is a oily dark chocolate brown cigar that has a decent box pressed format. The wrapper has a gritty toothy feel to it and the cigar seems to be nicely packed. There are minimal veins and it is finished with a well applied cap along with an unfinished foot (leaf is folded over the foot).

A single band adorns the Detox. It uses a varying lime green background with the word “DETOX” boldly printed in white on the bottom with two golden tobacco leaves on either side. The Company’s logo is printed on top.

From a pre-light aroma perspective, the Detox offered a pleasant floral citrus note along the barrel while the foot had notes of pungent earthiness and cocoa.

As I do with all normal vitolas, I sliced the cap straight across the shoulder and gave it some cold draw puffs to see what it had to offer. It did not waste any time introducing itself to me with a growing hot pepper note on the lips and tongue along with a hint of sweetness and earth.

After that pre-light introduction, it was time to warm the foot with my double flame torch lighter. The loose leaf on the foot took the heat fast and started the journey with the same hot pepper and sweetness I got from the pre-light, except this time the smoke opened the nasals for the rest of the journey. Follow along as I burn the Providencia Cigars Detox to ash.

Final Analysis

The Providencia Cigars Detox Toro was a complex, flavor filled, cigar that offered an array of palate filling notes from foot to nub delivered through a full volume of thick nd creamy smoke. Once the early cayenne pepper blast on the front faded, the transitions were smooth and pleasurable into the second third leading to a noticeable spice and citrus pairing midway. The aromas were also quite pleasant starting with a sweet cookie early and shifting to a maple syrup deep in the burn. Construction wise, the Detox performed fairly well, with just a mild wave in the burn and a slight off burn midway that did not need a touch-up. This is worth a box buy and I rate it a solid 93.

Point Deductions: (-1) Mild Wave in burn; (-1) Slight off Burn midway; (-1) Flat Burn Cone

Bonus Points: (+1) Buy a Box; (+1) Complex in Flavor and Aroma
