Casa Cuevas Connecticut Cigar Review – A Flavorful Conny

Back in August, I introduced you to Luis Cuevas, a 4th generation cigar man and owner of Tabacalera Las Lavas, S.R.L. in the Dominican Republic. At that time we reviewed  Luis’ own brand, Casa Cuevas Cigars – specifically the Maduro blend.  Today we are going blonde and will be reviewing the Casa Cuevas Connecticut which Luis describes as:

“A mild to medium blend In strength with a subtle spice that will intrigue and capture today’s cigar smokers.”

This is one of three blends that the company introduced at this past years IPCPR. The other 2 were the Maduro which we reviewed and the Habano. The Casa Cuevas Connecticut blend is described as:

• Wrapper – Ecuadorian Connecticut
• Binder – Nicaraguan
• Filler – Dominican and Nicaraguan

The Casa Cuevas Connecticut come packaged in blue lacquer, cedar lined boxes. For this review I sampled the Robusto vitola which I received from Luis for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Casa Cuevas Connecticut has beautiful medium tan and silky Connecticut wrapper that has a mild oil sheen to it. There is practically no veins, the seams are tight, and it is finished with a simple cap. The cigar has a decent weight in the hand and is solid from head to foot.

Like the Maduro blend, the band is classic and elegant with a blue and gold motif and the words Casa Cuevas centered in the middle. 

Running it across the nose, the Casa Cuevas Connecticut exuded notes of hay and pepper on the foot with a mild sweetness along the barrel..

I used my Palio double blade to slice the cap which was easily removed, and gave it a few cold draw puffs. The cold draw was open, no perceived restriction on this. The lips picked up a black pepper sensation that may be an early indication on what this journey may hold, there was also a an earthy component that mixed in to the cold draw.

Cigar Review Notes

• Initial puffs offer pepper on the palate and nose
• The pepper settles nicely after a half inch of burn
• A slight Connecticut bitterness enter
• Med grey ash develops on a thin  and even char line
• Spicy nut aroma
• Touch of fruit end of first third
• Full volume of creamy smoke
• Sweetness and cinnamon appear
• Ash fell into second third
• Fairly well centered and lightly pointed burn cone
• Berry fruit maintains
• Nut entering midway
• Aroma shifts to fruity
• Berry, nut, and sweetness maintains through the final
• Mild Strength
• Total Smoking Time was right around one hour

Overall, the Casa Cuevas Connecticut surprised me with its berry, nut, and sweetness considering the pre-light and initial pepper sensations I got. This is an elegant cigar with enticing aromas and solid burn. The price point makes this an easy buy and you can find them at a number of shops in Florida and across the country by checking the company’s website here.
