Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo Cigar Review

Ah yes; the storied Aganorsa Leaf, highlighted by Casa Fernandez. For those that are not familiar with this leaf, let me take you on a short journey back to 1997.

It was then that a young and successful New York financier and entrepreneur, Eduardo Fernandez, decided to take a chance and purchase land in Condega and Jalapa, Nicaragua to grow tobacco. The land was owned by post Sandinista-era farming cooperatives. The interesting part of the story is, Eduardo now had land but did not have experienced staff to turn the fertile dirt to fields of green. This was but a small challenge for Eduardo as he quickly reached out to Cuba and made the choice to hire retired agriculture experts and start the process of planting Cuban seed and cultivate what is now some of the most revered tobacco in Nicaragua. The result of his efforts were to be known as Agricola Ganadera Norteña S.A. or simply AGANORSA.

Over the past couple of decades the farms have flourished and are now one of the top producers of cigar tobacco leaf. The company built around this was Casa Fernandez which has manufacturing capacity in both Nicaragua and  Miami, FL.  They not only produce their own brand but also some of the most highly acclaimed boutique cigars including HVC, Illusione and Warped.

Of special note, the company just announced last month, they will be changing their name to Aganorsa Leaf.

With that background I would like to present to you a review of the Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo cigar.

The company’s website describes this cigar as:

“The Casa Fernandez Aganorsa Leaf is blended to highlight the range of taste and flavor Aganorsa tobacco is capable off. Not a cigar for beginners, but balanced with enough strength and flavor to be enjoyed by any true Aficionado.” 

The Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo is Nicaragua puro with a blend described by the company as:

• Capa (Wrapper) Aganorsa Corojo, Nicaragua
• Banda y Capote (Binder) Aganorsa, Nicaragua
• Tripa (Filler) Aganorsa, Nicaragua

Casa Fernandez offer this cigar in 3 vitolas each of which are packaged in 15-count boxes:

For this review I sampled the Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo Robusto which I received as part of the package at this years Smoke Inn, Great Smoke 2018. So let’s start breaking it down to see what it has to offer.

Pre-Light Examination

The Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo  is certainly a fine-looking cigar with its medium brown and slightly oily wrapper. The wrapper leaf is light on veins and has a nice marbling throughout. The construction is highlighted with a finely applied triple cap and solid packing from head to foot.

There are two bands that adorn the cigar. The primary band declares it as a product of Fabrica De Tobacos Casa Fernandez Miami, which means this one is made in the USA. The secondary band declares this to be an Aganorsa Leaf product.

Running the cigar across the nose, I picked up a sweet wrapper aroma and enticing hay and tea aromas off the foot.

 

Carefully slicing the cap along the first line, I gave it some cold draw puffs. The draw had a perfect restriction and delivered an intriguing cinnamon spice with a hint of sweetness. The cinnamon builds on the lips and tongue as you continue with the cold puffs, which I did for a couple of minutes.

I would say this is one of those cigars I could cold puff for quite a while but we need to get on with the review, so to the flame it goes. I used a single soft flame lighter to warm the foot taking in a few initial puffs, rolling it about to get a fine even burn and orange glow.

Cigar Review Notes

• Initial light greets you with cinnamon on the palate and nasals along with a gentle sweetness 
• Medium grey ash evolves on a medium char line 
• Excellent volume of smoke 
• A backdrop of buttery notes enter
• I tapped the ash near the end of the first third revealing a slight protruding burn cone that just a little off-center 
• Coffee notes enter in the second third
• Still with the cinnamon twist
• Delectable sweetness on the tip of the head
• Touch of earth moves into the profile
• Smooth smoke midway through
• Love the blend of flavors at this point with the ever-present sweetness
• Strength ratchets up to a medium-plus near the end of the second third
• Flavor maintains into the final with just a touch more earth 
• Total Smoking time was 1 hour and 20 minutes to the nub

Overall, the Casa Fernandez Miami Aganorsa Corojo was a delicious cigar with a core of sweetness and spice and nuances of earth, butter, and coffee. The burn was spot on yet it did have a slight flake in the ash. The smoke was cool, as was the barrel, throughout the journey. I would not call this overly complex, but it was quite enjoyable with the right balance of flavors. This is one that could be easily enjoyed any time of the day as the strength is not overpowering. The price point is right in the average consumers wheel house – so go ahead and pick some up and enjoy them after breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
