You may be asking yourself, what is a Chamuco? Well, it is a cross between an American Pit Bull Terrier and the now extinct Mexican Bulldog, along with several other breeds. If you were to ask Jon Huber, co-founder of Crowned Heads Cigar Company, he would say it is now a tweaked Headley Grange cigar.
The original Headley Grange (a Cigar Aficionado top 25 cigar in 2012) was a cigar blend created to smoke and taste like the steady, heavy sound of John Bonham’s Plodding Drum beat on the intro to the Led Zeppelin classic ‘When the Levee Breaks‘. That song was recorded in a former poorhouse (built in 1795) in East Hampshire, England, name Headley Grange.
Go ahead, listen to that drum beat again and you will understand.
Not to end the story there, the company released a riff on that blend and called it the “Black Lab LE 2018”, which was a nod to a Black Labrador Retriever that was found hanging around the Headley Grange recording studio during the recording of the Led Zeppelin IV.
The story continues in 2019, as the Crowned Heads team decided to create a new breed by taking the Headley Grange blend of fillers and binder and apply a Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper on it. Now tell me, who does not like Mexican San Andres tobacco?
Expressed in a stout 5.5 x 54 box pressed vitola, the Headley Grange Chamuco LE 2019 takes a little from the genes of the Black Lab 2018, as it has a closed foot, which the company states ‘spotlights the sweet nature of the Mexican wrapper upon ignition‘. I guess we can expect this not to have a bite.
Production of the Headley Grange Chamuco LE 2019 is limited to 1,500 12-count boxes for a total of 18,000 cigars and will begin shipping this month.
