Cigar News: Flavored Tobacco Products Are Now Prohibited in the City of Los Angeles

The Los Angeles City Council has passed an ordinance to prohibit the retail sale of flavored tobacco products which became effective on July 16, 2022, with an enforcement grace period until January 1, 2023.

The ordinance notes that on January 1, 2023, the following laws will be enforced:

  • LAMC 46.90.1(a): The retail sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes and flavored e-cigarettes, will be illegal in the City of Los Angeles.
  • LAMC 46.91(c); All retail tobacco sales must be in person. The online retail sale or delivery of tobacco products is prohibited.
  • LAMC 46.91(d); All wholesalers and distributors of tobacco products are required to obtain a City Tobacco Retailer’s Permit.
  • LAMC 46.91(d): All tobacco retailers are required to check the I.D. of any tobacco product purchaser. Only valid government issued ID is acceptable.
  • LAMC 46.91(f): The distribution of free or nominally priced tobacco products is prohibited.
