Cigar Review: Cattle Baron Cowboy – Rated 90

I have heard a lot about Cattle Baron Cigars and I finally got myself one last month down in Ft. Worth Texas. I was attending the Underground Cigar Shop, NFG19 event, and bumped into some nice folk that gifted me a Cattle Baron Cowboy. For those that don’t know, the Cowboy is a cigar.

A little something you may want to understand about this small Montana cigar company. Cattle Baron Cigars is the result of a partnership between Phillip Zhangi III from Debonaire House Cigars and Bryan Mussard a Montana Angus Bull rancher and producer of award winning, gluten free, 93 point rated Gorgeous Vodka.

According to their website:

“Cattle Baron Cigars were developed over 2 years. The cigars themselves have been in development for over eight years with critically tasting and sampling… After 12 blends, lucky #13 was the right one.” ​​

The company has just one cigar blend described as:

• Wrapper – Nicaraguan Habano
• Binder – Dominican
• Filler – Dominican Seco, Nicaraguan Viso

Cattle Baron cigars are available in 5 different vitolas each packaged in 20-count boxes.:

Pre-Light Examination

The Cattle Baron Cowboy is a tightly packed short corona with a medium brown wrapper that has some noticeable veins and a decent oily sheen. The cigar is finished with a simple cap and has a mild grit to the wrapper as you run your finger along the barrel.

A single band is saddled up on the cowboy. It uses some fun graphics, including a sideways horseshoe that engulfs the letter “B”. Together they represent Cattle Baron. Below that is an image of running Steers. The band is finished with the phrase “Cattle Baron” at the bottom.

I ran the cowboy across my nose, I know that is a bad visual, but better than running the Little Doggie along my nose. A light spice was detected along the barrel and an enticing natural tobacco sweetness off the foot.

I sliced the cap with my double blade Xikar cutter and took some cold puffs. The draw was decent – not to open not too tight. Notes of earth, spice, and butter intrigued the palate. I rolled it about a bit more just to savor these early cold draw notes, eventually detecting some sweetness too. But this phase of the exam has to come to end so I can appreciate the full Cattle Baron experience. I dug out my single flame torch and warmed the foot taking in the first peppery spiced puffs. Its time to burn this to ash.

Cigar Review Notes

• Peppery start, especially on the nose
• Background of tobacco sweetness trying to break free
• Salt and pepper ash develops on a jagged thick char line
• Hint of cocoa after joins the profile after an inch of burn
• Extreme volume of smoke for any cigar, especially a short corona
• A sprinkle of cinnamon blends in along with a nutmeg aroma
• Ash falls in nice chunk revealing a flat but centered burn cone
• Slight off burn after the ash fell which eventually required a touch-up
• Profile shifts to more of an earth and light spice in the final
• Burns hot to touch in the final
• Medium strength
• Total Smoking Time was 50 minutes

Overall, the Cattle Baron Cowboy was a fine short corona that lasted about 50 minutes and offered a delicious array of flavors and aromas. The flavors were well balanced through the journey. From a construction perspective, the Cattle Baron Cowboy held a decent salt and pepper ash, on a slightly jagged burn line that eventually ran off a bit later in the burn. It also burned hot to the touch in the final. I would say this is worth a fiver if you are looking for a short smoke in your line up. I rate this a 90.
