Cigar Review: Cornelius and Anthony The Gent Robusto – Rated 92

We introduced you to the Mistress from Cornelius & Anthony Cigars last month and she was a power house. Now it’s time to meet her friend, The Gent. Both cigars were introduced at this years IPCPR to great fanfare and have been spotted on social media channels quite a bit.

The Gent from Cornelius & Anthony Cigars is a stark contrast to The Mistress starting with the blend which is described as:

  • Wrapper – Ecuador
  • Binder – USA
  • Filler – Nicaragua / Honduras

The company describes The Gent as follows:

Together with a perfect hint of sweetness from our US grown binder, The Gent has a beautiful depth of flavor. This box-pressed cigar has a legendary refinement that draws you in from the first puff to the very last.

The Gent is  available in 4 vitolas:

  • Corona Gorda – 5.5 x 46 (MSRP $7.95)
  • Robusto – 5 x 52 (MSRP $8.50)
  • Toro – 6 x 50 (MSRP $8.90)
  • Gordo – 6 x 60 (MSRP $9.75)

For this review, I sampled the robusto vitola of The Gent which I received from Cornelius & Anthony Cigars at this years IPCPR for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Gent by Cornelius & Anthony Cigars is a milk chocolate brown, box press cigar, that is silky smooth to the touch with minimal veins. It is perfectly finished with a triple cap.

The Gent is adorned with 2 bands. The primary band is the standard Cornelius & Anthony logo while the secondary band declares the cigar as “The Gent”.

Pre-light aromas included a sweet fermented leaf along the barrel and delightfully enticing sweet caramelized sugar and baking spice notes off the foot.

Proceeding to the cold draw, I sliced the cap with my dual blade Xikar cutter and gave it a few puffs. The cold draw was nicely restricted with notes of mild black pepper and plum notes.  Tasty indeed – as it is one I could just roll about and cold puff for a while.

As much as I enjoyed the developing flavors in the cold draw it was time to turn the Gent to ash. So I toasted it up with my dual flame JetLine lighter and took in the intial full and creamy smoke.

  • There is a light pepper burn on the nose to start
  • Sweetness and spice enter quickly offering a balance to the pepper
  • White ash develops on a thick  but slightly wavy burn line
  • Cinnamon is revealed as the spice
  • Fruit aroma fills the air around me
  • A lingering dry fruit note enters filling out the introductory profile
  • Ash falls after an inch or more of burn revealing a flat yet centered burn cone
  • Smooth balanced smoke into the second third
  • The early wave transitions to an off burn in the second third that eventually required a mild touchup
  • Cocoa nuances start to show deep into the second third
  • Spice adds back in the final third
  • Off burn appears once again
  • Mild to Medium in Strength
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 15 minutes

Overall, I rate the Gent from Cornelius & Anthony a 92. This cigar had a delicious prelight set of notes and a full  and creamy smoke once ignited. Though not overly complex, the Gent delivers on flavor keeping a well balanced flavor transition through the journey. There was however, some off burns that required a touch up. At a price of $8.50 for the Robusto, I might pick up another if I spotted it on the shelf, but for me I would lean towards the Mistress instead.

Point Deductions: (-1) Off Burn, (-1) Flat Burn Cone, (-1) Required Touch Up, (-1) Buy One Again

  • Jimmy,
Was awesome meeting you and getting to shoot the breeze over smokes at the wedding on the island. Finally getting the time to catch up on some reviews and hopefully fire up a stick, winter has hit up north and made smoking outdoors a challenge. I’ve really enjoyed the couple C&A blends I’ve had the chance to enjoy, will need to give this a shot next time I see one on the shelf. Are you doing any events in the north country in the near future?

    Cheers,
    Cameron

    • Cameron,

I will be in Detroit are the week of December 9th.. Then that’s about it for this year.

I am not looking forward to freezing my ass off in Michigan but I will find my way to some warm shops to enjoy some.

      Best Regards
      Jimmie
