This is my 3rd take on the Providencia Cigars Trinitas. The first two comprised of a pre-release review in 2017 and then a review of the production version in January of this year. Along the way, it seems the Trinitas has gotten a few more reviews and has been selling quite well according to Ray Zinar, co-owner of the company. So to make things more interesting and please the needs of consumers, the company has added line extensions to a number of its popular brands like today cigar of choice, the Providencia Trinitas Corona.
Let’s recap the Trinitas blend to get things started. To begin with, this is a triple ligero blend that is described as follows:
- Wrapper: San Andrés
- Binder: Nicaraguan Ligero
- Long Fillers: Nicaragua Ligero
The corona vitola weighs in at 5.75 x 44; a size that is relatively new to Providencia but one that fills a need in the company’s portfolio.
The Trinitas comes packaged in 20-count boxes with an MSRP of 179.80/box or roughly $9.00/cigar
I recently received some samples of products from Providencia Cigars to review on Stogie Press with the Trinitas corona being one of them. Having thoroughly enjoyed the original Trinitas I was certainly looking forward to trying this blend in a smaller ring gauge and see how it performed.
Pre-Light Examination
The Providencia Trinitas Corona is a beautiful and well constructed cigar with a dark brown and marbled wrapper that has a light gritty tooth to it. It has all but invisible seams, a decent oily sheen and is light on veins. Solid to the touch, this one was just begging me to smoke it.
The band is the same as the original Trinitas, using a silver and black motif. The Providencia logo is proudly displayed along with the bold name “TRINITAS” acorss the top and a reminder that is “TRIPLE LIGERO” printed on the bottom.
Pre-light aromas included sweet and tangy notes along the barrel and a mild fruit off the foot.
I sliced the cap with a simple straight cut and gave it some cold draw puffs that were perfectly restricted and offered growing pepper and light earthy notes.
With the preliminaries out of the way and much to my liking it was time to turn this little one to ash. I used a single flame torch to warm the foot so as not to over scorch it. Anything larger may have been too much heat for the small surface area of the foot of the corona. The first puffs delivered a delightful set of rich notes including baking spice, coffee, and fruit.
Cigar Review Notes
- First light offers rich notes of baking spice, fruit, and coffee
- Solid white ash on thin char line
- Sweet cracker aroma
- Cinnamon spice and sweetness add to the early profile (there is a lot going on in first inch of burn)
- I slight wave in the burn appears
- Incredible volume of smoke off a small ring gauge cigar
- Ash falls with a well formed burn cone
- Strength is rapidly moving up
- Maple syrup aroma
- Sweetness and earth enter quickly morphing into dark chocolate and spice
- Burn line has evened out nicely
- Mild citrus finish
- Aroma shifts to spice
- Fine sweet undertone
- Increased spice and earth and full strength through the finish
- Total Smoking Time was just under 1 hour
Overall, the Corona vitola expression of the Providencia Trinitas was just as spectacular as the original. For a small vitola this cigar packed a punch and delivered a complex yet balanced array of flavors and aromas. This is one I can recommend purchasing a box of. It burned clean, with zero hot spots along the way. When I think about corona vitolas, I think of my favorite, the Cuban Montecristo #4, the Providencia Trinitas is damn close. I rate this a solid 96.
