Over the past few months I have reviewed two Dapper cigar products to date and as noted in the the review of the review of the company’s El Borracho, Dapper Cigars founder Ian Reith had one goal, “Make just one Great Cigar“. Well that cigar was the second fine cigar I reviewed from the young company and in my mind they certainly proved themselves over the past few years. Today I would like to review another Dapper Cigars blend, the Siempre Sun Grown. It should come as no surprise that the name Siempre, which translates to “always”, is precisely what I was hoping for, when it came to another Dapper blend.
Released in late summer of 2018, the Siempre Sun Grown has a bold multi-country blend described as:
- Wrapper – Ecaudorian Sungrown Sumatra
- Binder – Connecticut Broadleaf
- Filler – Nicaraguan (Estelí, Ometepe and Jalapa), Honduran (Jamastran Valley)
The Dapper Cigars Siempre Sun Grown is expressed in four popular vitolas and come packaged in 10-count boxes:
- Corona (5 5/8 x 45) MSRP $11.22
- Robusto (4 1/2 x 50) MSRP $11.82
- Toro (6 1/8 x 50) MSRP $12.42
- Gordo (6 x 60) MSRP $12.98
All Siempre Sun Grown Cigars are manufactured by Nicaragua America Cigars, S.A. (NACSA) in Estelí, Nicaragua
For this review, I sampled one Dapper Cigars Siempre Sun Grown Gordo that was given to me by the company at TPE 2020 for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.
Pre-Light Examination
The Dapper Cigars Siempre Sun Grown is a dark brown cigar that has some noticeable veins running along the barrel and is finished with a decent cap. The cigar is firm to the touch and seems solidly packed. It has a decent sheen and is smooth as you run your fingers along the barrel.
The band that adorns the Siempre is as bold as the blend. It uses an orangey-red, gold, and white motif. Two golden medieval gargoyles are presented on either side of a golden shield with a five point crown on top. The name “SIEMPRE” is displayed in a golden ribbon below.
It should be noted that gargoyles are said to protect, what they guard, from evil or harmful spirits. I would say, in this case, they are protecting the company’s mantra of making great cigars “Always”.
I ran the Siempre Sun Grown across the nose and picked up a baking spice aroma along the barrel and refreshing citrus notes off the foot.
Once I sliced the cap with my double blade Xikar cutter, I took some cold puffs taht were spot on with restriction and graced the palate with a bit of earthiness and pepper.
With the preliminary work out of the way, it was time to fire this one up and burn it to ash. I used my double flame torch to warm the foot to an even orange glow and drew in the first puffs of smoke that awoke the palate with notes of cocoa and spice. Follow along as we take another Dapper Cigars journey.
Cigar Review Notes
- Initial puffs offered Cocoa and Spice notes off first light
- Light grey ash forms on a medium char line
- Smooth easy smoke so far
- Off burn developed early and required a touch up
- Woody notes join the mix
- Ash falls, revealing slightly off centered burn cone
- Fruit notes add the pleasure
- Second touch up is required
- Spice notes enter midway
- Dark chocolate morsels appear deep in the second third with a mild spice wrapping it
- Finishes with a spicy note
- Medium to Full in Strength
- Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 40 minutes
Overall, I found the Dapper Cigars Siempre Sun Grown gordo to be a flavorful cigar with notes of fruit, dark chocolate, spice, and hint of woodiness. While the flavors and aromas were pleasant and smooth from the get go, the Siempre unfortunately had a few burn issues including off burns that required multiple touch-ups. This is one I may try again but would like to check it out in a smaller vitola also. I rate this an 88.
Point Deductions: (-1) Wavy Burn; (-1) Off Centered Burn Cone; (-2) Multiple Touch ups; (-1) Off Burn; (-1) May Try Another
