Cigar Review: Platinum Nova Sultan Box Pressed Torpedo – Rated 96

Today I offer another review of Platinum Nova Cigars craft – the Sultan Box Pressed Torpedo. As noted in previous reviews on Platinum Nova cigars, each vitola is a different blend and in the case of the Sultan Box Pressed Torpedo the company describes the blend as:

  • Wrapper – Mexican San Andres
  • Filler – Dominican
  • Binder – Dominican

Platinum Nova Cigars notes:

“The San Andres wrappers and Dominican fillers are aged to perfection, then expertly combined and set aside on the box press for months to allow the flavors to slowly marry into a smoothness which makes the smoking experience even more enlightening.”

For this review, I sampled one Platinum Nova Sultan Box Pressed Torpedo which I received from the company as part of a sampler pack, for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Platinum Nova Sultan Box Pressed Torpedo is a beautifully constructed box pressed torpedo with crisp edges and a geometrically square pressing. It has an oily dark chocolate brown wrapper that a some red tinges in it and is nicely marbled. The cigar is solid to the touch with tight seams and a well applied torpedo cap. There is one noticeable vein running down off the head of the cigar. The box pressing offers a velvet smooth feel to the wrapper.

Two bands adorn the vitola. Both bands use a light aqua, black, and silver motif. The primary band proudly displays the Platinum Nova Cigars logo that is in of itself a classy band. Directly below, the secondary band defines this as the SULTAN.

As I ran the barrel along the nose, there was no noticeable aromas but the foot exudes notes of baking spice and a touch of fruit.

Using my Xikar double blade cutter, I slices the well finished torpedo cap at a 45 degree angle as I do with all torpedos. The cold draw is spot on with restriction and offers notes of chocolate, sweet raisin, and just a sprinkle of pepper. Very pleasant indeed!

The foot took very nicely to the heat of my double flame torch as I drew in the first puffs of full, thick, and chewy smoke. The initial notes included the pre-light raisin along with a gentle spice on the retro-hale. Follow along as I burn the Sultan to ash.
