It has been a while since I last spoke about Providencia Cigars, but that has not stopped the small Texas cigar company from hitting the market with more fine cigars. Although I was not able to attend the Underground Cigar Lounge, NFG20 event, I was sent a care package that included the Providencia Rusted Revolver. I must say, that is an interesting name indeed.
The Rusted Revolver is finely constructed barber pole style vitola, that uses a mix of San Andres and Connecticut leaf for the wrapper. The full blend is described as:
- Wrapper – San Andres and Connecticut
- Binder – Indonesian Sumatra
- Filler – Nicaragun (Jalapa), Honduran (Jamastran and Trojes)
The Providencia Rusted Revolver is expressed in a single 6 x 52 toro with an MSRP of $10.50 per cigar. They come in a 20-count boxes and bundles. The first run of these have completely sold out according to the company and more will be showing up later this year.
Pre-Light Examination
The Providencia Rusted Revolver is, as I mentioned, a well constructed barber pole. There is a fine contrast between the dark brown San Andres leaf which has a light toothy feel to it and the smooth medium tan Connecticut leaf. The seams are tight and it is well capped. There a few noticeable veins running along the barrel. It had a decent weight and was solidly packed with no discernible soft spots.
A single band adorns the cigar that proudly displays the company logo at the top and the name “RUSTED REVOLVER” below. A old rusted revolver is displayed on both sides of the band.
Pre-light aromas included a light pungent fermented leaf along the barrel and a sweet floral note off the foot.
I sliced the cap straight across the shoulder and proceeded to give it some cold puffs to see what it offered. The pre-light draw was a bit snug and delivered notes of sweetness and butter. As I continued to cold puff it I noted a growing light pepper note.
I used a double flame torch lighter to warm the foot and drew in the introductory notes of the journey that I would described as slightly harsh. Follow along as I turn the Rusted Revolver to ash.
Cigar Review Notes
- First puffs were slightly harsh on the palate
- Nice white ash rests on a thin char line
- Good volume of smoke
- Candied sugar notes brighten the profile with a distinctive Honduran flavor note in the background
- Creamy Coffee notes join the mix as the flavors are blending well
- Slight off burn develops
- Touch of spice enters joined with a mild Connecticut bitterness
- Touch up was eventually required
- Ash fell revealing an off centered burn cone
- The sweetness, coffee, and spice swirl about through the second third
- Cinnamon spice appears deep in the second third
- Earthy aromas wafts off the foot
- Light Connecticut bitterness enters again
- Maple syrup notes are highlighted in the final
- Medium in Strength
- Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 20 minutes
Overall, the Providencia Rusted Revolver was a pleasant cigar that would make for a great start of the day with a cup of coffee. Once it got past the early harshness it quickly settled into a naturally sweet tobacco flavor that stayed throughout the journey. Besides the sweetness, I enjoyed the cinnamon and coffee notes. There was an occasional bitterness that entered when it got into the Connecticut part of the wrapper but it was nicely balanced with the sweetness making for a tasty bittersweet note. It did have a slight off burn that required a mild touch up. If you are looking for a start of the day cigar, pick up a fiver of these when they become available again. I know the Underground Cigar Shop in Ft. Worth, TX carries the brand. I rate this a 90.
