Announced during the #DESummerTakeover campaign and highlighted on Freestyle Live: Special Edition the Drew Estate Undercrown Dojo Dogma Sun Grown is the creation of Drew Estate Master Blender Willy Herrera and Cigar Dojo Master Sensei Eric Guttormson.
Undercrown Dojo Dogma Sun Grown is a 5 x 54 box-pressed robusto chosen by Drew Estate Master Blender Willy Herrera and Cigar Dojo Master Sensei Eric Guttormson for its bolder profile.
The blend is described as:
- Wrapper – Ecuadorian Sumatra Sun Grown
- Binder – Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut/Cured Sun Grown Habano
- Filler – Nicaraguan
According to the press release on the Dogma:
“One leaf of extensively aged Ligero from the Nueva Segovia region, along the border of Honduras, has been carefully selected to enhance the intense character of the blend.“
The Dogma is expressed in a single (5 x 54) box-pressed robusto and comes packaged in a 24-count wooden box, featuring the dual emblems of Undercrown and the Cigar Dojo community. The MSRP has been set at $10.20/cigar ($244.80/box). You can find these at Drew Diplomat Retailers nationwide.
Pre-Light Examination
The Drew Estate Undercrown Dojo Dogma Sun Grown is a soft boxed pressed cigar with a medium tan wrapper. There are just a few viens running along the barrel and a few bumps here and there. Smooth to the touch, the cigar has a solid feel and is fished with a simple cap.
Three bands bands adorn the Dogma, all using a red and gold motif. The primary band is the standard Drew Estate Undercrown logo. The seocndary band, placed just under the primary, declares this as the “DOGMA” and further notes “Cigar Dojo Commemorative Edition”. The final band is a footer band that denotes this as “SUNGROWN”.
Running the Dogma along the nose, I was greeted with a lightly pungent barrel along with notes of cocoa, raisin, and spice off foot. The aromas of the foot had me chomping at the bit to fire this one up. Before I did that, I need to open it up and take some cold draw puffs.
I used my double blade cutter to slice the easily removable cap, straight across the shoulder of the cigar. The draw was fairly open and offered a hint of white pepper that tickled the throat.
My triple flame torch was used to warm the foot as I drew in the first puffs of peppery smoke to start the journey. Follow along as I burn the Dogma to ash.

Overall, I would not describe the Drew Estate Undercrown Dojo Dogma Sun Grown as a complex blend. It tended to have a fairly consistent pepper, and eventually, cinnamon spice, core. There were some nuances of sweetness and dry fruit and the final few puffs offered an interesting earl grey tea note. From a construction perspective it had some waves and off burns that required a couple of touch-ups along the way, to keep it burning straight. I rate this a 88.
