Do you know what the number one cigar review viewed on Stogie Press is? It is the original Island Jim No. 2, a review I penned way way back in March of 2015. It just seems people keep searching for this cigar. Now, 8 years later I have the pleasure of penning a review of the newest Island Jim No. 2 blend that was announced at the 2023 Total Product Expo and offered in the package of cigars we all received as part of this years Smoke Inn “The Great Smoke 2023”.
This is actually the third iteration of this particular (6 x 52) torpedo vitola which like the previous renditions is formed into a special press that makes it look like a pencil. Yea, that is where the No. 2 name comes from.
The blend is described as:
- Wrapper – Honduran Connecticut
- Binder – Undisclosed
- Filler – Undisclosed
They are packaged in 21-count boxes and have a wallet friendly MSRP of $12.00/cigar. Like the others in the line, it is hand crafted at Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Co. in Honduras.
Speaking to Island Jim at this years Great Smoke, he told me, we (the attendees) are the first to have this new cigar and they will now be shipping to retailers nationwide.
Pricing is set at $12 per cigar and it is offered in 21-count boxes. It is produced by Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Co. in Honduras.
Pre-Light Examination
The Island Jim Connecticut No. 2 is undeniably a visually striking cigar. Its appearance is reminiscent of its predecessors, but with a velvety, light brown wrapper that exudes elegance and refinement. The signature flared shaggy foot and skillfully applied pencil tip cap are present, adding a touch of sophistication not to mention the sliver of darker oily leaf near the cap. The barrel is exhibits just a few veins, and the cigar is expertly packed, creating a firm and substantial feel.
The single band is identical to previous iterations of the Island Jim No. 2, featuring a bold image of the man himself in the center and the name “ISLAND JIM” below. The left and right sides of the band depict red palm trees on a lush green tropical background. The Oscar Valladares logo appears on the far left of the band, completing the overall aesthetic of the band.
Upon taking in the aroma of the cigar, a pleasant buttery note is immediately detected emanating from the foot. While there are minimal aromas along the barrel, the overall scent is still quite enjoyable.
Before smoking, one must contemplate how to open up this vitola, as the tip is open and one can draw from it. However, the draw may be a little tight, and therefore, a small amount needs to be sliced off to allow for better air flow. Nevertheless, the cigar doesn’t require a deep cut. Once opened, the cigar provides an invigorating cold draw, leaving behind a mild pepper and fruity flavor that pleases the palate.
Using a single flame torch, the shaggy foot is easily ignited, which leads to a mouth-filling explosion of fruity notes that immediately captivates the senses. Follow along as this remarkable cigar burns down to ashes.

Final Analysis
The Island Jim Connecticut No. 2 offers a delightful and pleasant burst of dry fruit notes right off the first light that stimulates the senses. The draw is silky smooth, producing a decent volume of smoke that is both satisfying and enjoyable. As the burn progresses, delicate cream notes entwine with the fruitiness, providing a harmonious and balanced flavor profile. Sweetness and light cinnamon notes make a subtle entrance, moving the profile forward into the second third, which continues to impress with its rich and satisfying flavors. Increase in spice in the final third adds an extra layer of intrigue to the already present fruit and cream notes. This is a box worthy cigar for anyone that is looking for a perfect morning smoke to start the day or even the last of the day. I rate this a 93.
