Late in 2023, Jake Wyatt Cigars announced they started to ship their newest blend – the Jake Wyatt Maverick. Named after son of co-founder Gerard Abajian, the Maverick toro debuted at the 2023 TPE and at the 2023 PCA the company showcased two more vitolas of the bold new blend.
The blend of the J.W. Maverick is described by the company as much bolder and fuller than anything the company has released to date:
- Wrapper – Mexican San Andrés
- Binder – Corojo
- Filler – Pennsylvania Broadleaf, Criollo and Piloto
The Maverick is expressed in three vitolas, each packaged in 22-count boxes:
- Robusto (5 x 50) – MSRP $9.00
- Toro (6 x 54) – MSRP $10.00
- Box-Pressed Gordo (6 x 60) – MSRP $11.00
The J.W. Maverick is handcrafted at Casamorabo Tabacalera in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
For this review, I sampled one of the Jake Wyatt Maverick Robustos which I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.
Pre-Light Examination
The Jake Wyatt Maverick Robusto is draped in a toothy dark brown wrapper that exhibits a fine oily sheen. There are minimal veins in the wrapper. The cigar is firmly packed and excellently rolled with a well applied triple cap. One note, I am not too sure about calling this a Robusto as it seems to be more a 46 ring gauge than a 50.
A single band adorns the cigar that is different than their past releases. This time they used a white and gold band that displays the company logo at the top and the name MAVERICK below the logo. I like how the band pops on the background of the dark brown wrapper leaf.
Running the Maverick along the nose I picked up a sweet tobacco notes along the barrel and baking spice notes off the foot.
Using my double blade cutter, I sliced the well applied cap straight across the shoulder of the cigar and proceeded to give it some cold draw puffs that offered notes of sweetness, pepper and chocolate all though a perfectly restricted draw.
I warmed the foot to an even orange glow with my single flame torch and drew in the introductory puffs of natural tobacco sweetness to start the journey. Follow along as I burn this one to ash.

Final Analysis
The initial draws of the Jake Wyatt Maverick reveal a tasty natural sweetness, imparted smoothly with each puff. A fragrant bouquet of floral and fruity aromas emanates from the foot, enticing the senses with its allure. Early on, the palate is enveloped by the harmonious marriage of orange and honey notes, casting an inviting ambiance. As the journey progresses into the second third, a nutty essence emerges, lending depth to the flavor profile. Soon, the indulgence is heightened by the arrival of rich cocoa undertones, amplifying the pleasure with each savory draw. Midway through, a subtle spiciness intermingles with the ensemble, adding an intriguing layer of complexity. Finally, as the cigar approaches its conclusion, cedar notes make an entrance, accompanied by a lingering earthy essence that leaves a lasting impression on the palate. This is worth a box buy. I rate this a solid 96.
