It’s lunch time, and you have about 45 minutes to relax before getting back to work but you want to enjoy a fine cigar. A toro, robusto, or torpedo is not going to cut it, as you would not want to rush the cigar and miss all the flavor. So you reach for something like a corona, something that will give maximum pleasure and relaxation for that time.
Today I would like to discuss the Dominican Big Leauguer (DBL) Atomic Ant. This 4 x 40 power house is just perfect for that time you need a little nicotine kick to continue your day. The DBL Atomic Ant is a blend of Dominican binder and fillers all perfectly wrapped in a dark San Andres leaf.
Rolling it between my fingers, the DBL Atomic Ant, has a decent weight for a corona. It is well packed and firm to the touch. The aromas on the foot and barrel, along with the cold draw flavors, are classic DBL – raisin and cinnamon.
Once fired up, I can tell you, there is no shortage of nasal cleaner here. Bright pepper notes fill the palate and nose. The ash is bright white and solid in construction. In fact, that ash held for longer than I would have expected from a small ring gauge cigar.
The pepper is joined with cinnamon spice after an inch of the burn, continuing to the half way point, where the Atomic Ant shows a sweeter side with notes of raisin and a hint of cedar. The draw has a nice restriction to it and the burn has been pristine.
Fruit aroma fills the air from each puff, as the strength ratchets up quickly, clocking in at full. The fruit, sweetness, and spice continue through the second half, keeping the senses awake.
Although not an overly complex cigar, the DBL Atomic Ant was perfect for when you don’t have much time, but do not want to sacrifice flavor, body, and strength. It was a well constructed cigar that delivered on everything I expect from Francisco Almonte and DBL and has an MSRP of $4.90. Nice job Francisco!
