Debonaire Daybreak Cigar Review

Just before the 2017 IPCPR, Drew Estate and Debonaire House announced the release of a new Connecticut shade cigar named the Daybreak. This introduction would be the third addition to the now familiar Debonaire Ultra Premium Cigars lineup. As part of the press release, Phillip S. Zanghi III, owner of Debonaire House, stated:

“I have always wanted to officially produce one of our ultra premium cigars with a higher quality Connecticut wrapper; not just for the sake of producing a Connecticut, but for the sake of having a lighter wrapper option that is very present in the body and flavor expected from a Debonaire Ultra Premium Cigar. Daybreak is the product of those desires and is the beautiful third-addition to the Debonaire Ultra Premium Cigars lineup. Daybreak allows more smokers to connect our product line and invites more people to find their place within the Debonaire Ideal.”

The Debonaire Daybreak blend is described as:

  • Wrapper -Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade
  • Binder – Dominican
  • Filler – Dominican

The ultra-premium Debonaire Daybreak is available in six vitolas and come packaged in 20-count boxes:

  • Corona (6×46) –  MSRP of $11.53
  • Belicoso (6×54) – MSRP of $13.25
  • First Degree (4×44) – MSRP of $6.00
  • Robusto (5×50) – MSRP of $12.46
  • Sagita-Petite Lancero (5.5×38) – MSRP of $8.74
  • Toro (6×50) – MSRP of $13.00

For this review I sampled the Debonaire Daybreak Toro, which I received from the company as part of Debonaire Ideal, for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Debonaire Daybreak is a beautifully constructed and light tan Connecticut shade cigar. The wrapper has minimal veins and has a slight tooth to the touch. It prefect finished with a well applied triple cap and has a solid feel in the hand. Gently pressing the barrel I detected no soft spots in the packing.

Debonaire Daybreak The cigar is adorned with a single large band that uses a gold, white and dark brown motif. The Company’s logo is centered in the middle. In case you were wondering they make it clear that this “Hand Rolled” and is part of “Ultra Premium” line of the company. Finally the bold white word “Debonaire” is presented on a gold background. It is certainly a cigar that will pop on the shelf in humidor.

I ran the Debonaire Daybreak  along the nose and picked of a dried tea leaf note in the foot but not much along the barrel.

I chose to slice this with my double blade Colibri cutter right along the first line of the triple cap. The cold draw was tight and delivered notes of earth and pepper.

  • Early burn has a sharp tangy note and some dryness to it
  • A medium peppery spice quickly joins the profile
  • Draw is a bit restricted and not a full volume of smoke yet
  • Aromas are sweet
  • A solid white ash develops on a thin and slightly jagged char line
  • Smooth smoke after end of first third
  • A touch of cedar and nut enters into the second third
  • Delicious fruit notes enter with a sliver of cinnamon burn on the lips
  • Ash fell after a solid burn with a nice protruding burn cone
  • Slight Connecticut bitterness mixed with a sweetness midway into the burn
  • Minty notes join the profile briefly
  • Burn has been spot on in the second third
  • The core fruit and nut notes maintain
  • Fruit moves to a more citrus note
  • Spice builds into the final third
  • Mild to Medium in strength
  • Total Smoking time was 1 hour and 10 minutes

Overall, the Debonaire Daybreak was aptly named as this was an enjoyable first cigar of the day with its sweet aromas and mouth-watering flavors like fruit, cinnamon, and mint. This is a perfect cigar to pair with a cafe mocha as you enjoy the sun rising on a weekend morning. The burn was impeccable while holding a long solid ash and a perfectly formed burn cone. Even though the draw was tight to begin, it did open up and deliver a pleasurable smoking experience.
