Esteban Disla’s Guáimaro Cigar Review

In case you have not heard of Esteban Disla, he is the co-owner of Fabrica de Tobacos Nica Sueno which is the RoMa Craft Tobac factory in Nicaragua. Esteban is the tobacco man and has been the master cigar maker for RoMa Craft since 2011. At the 2016 IPCPR Esteban introduced his personal creation the Guáimaro.  The name comes from a town and municipality in the southern part of Camagüey Province in Cuba which holds a prominent place in Cuban history.  In 1869 the Revolutionary Army of Mambises met in Guáimaro and created the Constitution for a new nation free from Spanish colonial oppression.

As far as the Guáimaro cigar, Esteban chose to use a bold and flavorful blend of leaf described as:

• Wrapper – Mexican San Andrés
• Binder – Brazilian Arapiraca Castaño
• Filler – Dominican Republic and Nicaragua

The Guáimaro is available in 3 soft box pressed vitolas and packed in 20-count boxes

Pre-Light Examination

Looking at the Guáimaro you can understand why Esteban Disla is Skip Martin’s go to man for making RoMa Craft cigars. The Guaimaro is a gorgeous soft box press cigar with a toothy, dark brown, and oily San Andres wrapper. It is finished with a double cap and adorned with a simple white band that states Guáimaro. The letter “O” has a white cross with red and blue colors in the corners.

Running the Guáimaro across the nose I picked up fruit and a touch of earth off the foot along with a truly enticing, sweet morning pastry aroma along the shaft. Wow, between the look and pre-light aroma this is shaping up to be a cigar I want to taste.

I sliced the cap and the cold draw had a restriction that was just as I prefer, you know what I mean, not too tight and not too loose. It offered a cluster of notes including butter, red pepper, earth, and fruit.  Each stage of the exam is making my mouth water to smoke this to the nub. As we know, the pre-light can be very different from the smoking experience so follow along as I take you on the Guáimaro journey.

Cigar Review Notes

• Once fired up my palate was greeted with floral and earth notes
• A sweet nut enters shortly after
• Solid white ash evolves on a razor-thin and straight char line
• Cedar notes fill out the early profile
• Syrupy aroma fills the air in the lounge
• Earthy and coffee notes
• Ash fell after the first third and revealed a fairly flat and centered burn cone
• Citrus builds into the second third
• The nut maintains its presence
• Natural sweetness
• By the end of the second third, the earth grows more deeply
• A bitter citrus peel entered in the final third
• Aroma shifted to a pleasant floral 
• Solid medium in strength
• Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 40 minutes

Overall, the Guáimaro by Esteban Disla was an outstanding cigar with an enormous flavor profile and pristine burn. The aromas were enticing and the pre-light examination absolutely lived up to my expectation of the smoking experience. With its medium strength this is a cigar that could be enjoyed any time of the day but in the evening it would be perfect with a dark peaty single malt scotch. If you like RoMa Craft I am sure you will love Guáimaro.
