This past week I was visiting Detroit and my good friend Roman (AKA Trident) from Cigar Fellas, gifted me a Fallen Angel cigar to try. The Fallen Angel is an A J Fernandez cigar that is hard to come by and I really appreciate being turned on to it. After a long week of business I sat on the balcony of my hotel room to relax and check out this flavorful cigar.
To start let me explain the construction of this stick. It is a box pressed stogie with an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapped cigar. If you are not familiar with this wrapper it is a beautiful dark brown and slightly oily leaf. This is the leaf used in the Rocky Patel Decade. The particular variety of this leaf is the 7th cut (priming) of the plant so it gathers an enormous amount of sun, minerals, and nutrients from the soil. It is part of the top most leaves (ligero) of the plant and have been on the plant 50% longer than most leaf and as a result they actually start to cure on the plant. Unlike other Sumatra plants it is grown in Ecuador which is on the equator giving it maximum sun time during growth. Rounding out the blend, the Binder is Mexican and the Filler is Nicaraguan from Esteli, Condega, and Ometepe. That Ometepe is special also, grown in rich volcanic soil.
I clipped the single cap and fired it up. The front was giving my a nice dose of spice mixed with prominent notes of butter and a background of cedar. The smoke was quite full and the retrohale had a light burn from the pepper. So far the whitish grey ash burn was perfect on this stick. I am really enjoying the mix of pepper and butter.
Getting into the second third, the spice settled into the mix and there were notes of almond and some sweetness developing. The ash continued to hold tight while the burn line was perfect into the second third. The ash fell in the middle of the second third but picked right back up down to just north of the band. This is actually pairing well with my Sam Adams October fest.
The final third enhances the sweetness and there is a caramel flavor taking effect while the butter creeps in again. The smoke is creamy. This delectable flavor stays with the Fallen Angel till the end. This was a delightful finish to a fantastic stick.
