Today we dig a little deeper into the Jeremy Jack Cigars lineup with a review of the Jeremy Jack 23 or as they call it, the JJ23. This is one of the numerous cigars that the company introduced at this years IPCPR. If you would like to get more information about this young and upcoming boutique cigar company you can read our review of the Jeremy Jack 15 (JJ15) here.
As far as the Jeremy Jack 23., it is the darker sibling of the JJ15 with a blend that is described as:
- Wrapper – Mexican San Andrés maduro
- Binder – Nicaraguan
- Filler – Nicaraguan
The Jeremy Jack 23 is available in 2 popular vitolas and packaged in classic 20-count cedar boxes:
- Robusto (5.25 x 54) – $9.00
- Toro (6.5 x 52) – $9.20
For this review I sampled the Jeremy Jack 23 Robusto which I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.
Pre-Light Examination
The Jeremy Jack 23 is a waxy dark brown cigar with a few veins and bumps along the barrel. There is a light tooth to the wrapper but not as gritty as other San Andres cigars I have experienced. It is finished with a decent cap and is adorned with two bands. The primary band is the standard red, white, and black Jeremy Jack logo. I have to say the band pops on the background of the dark wrapper. There is a black and white footer band that declares it as the JJ23 cigar with the letters “JJ” centered above the number “23”.
Running the JJ23 along the nose I picked up a sweet fruit on foot and light spice along the barrel. The cold draw offered a slight restriction and notes of butter, salt, with a sprinkle of pepper.
The Jeremy Jack website proudly notes:
“Jeremy Jack embodies our sophisticated, yet rugged lifestyle. We want better than good – we crave the exceptional. And while we callus our hands in style – in business, on a mountain, or the 18th hole – at the end of the day, it’s game on for pleasure.”
Game on for me – for sure, as I warm the foot with my single flame torch and to prepare the JJ23 for enjoyment.
Cigar Review Notes
- Pepper shot greets you on initial puffs – opening your nasals on the retro-hale
- Butter and fruit enters as the pepper recedes
- Butternut aroma fills the air around me
- Medium grey ash rests in a medium thick char line with a slight wave
- Hint of mint flavor enters to start the second third
- Smoke is full and creamy with a relatively clean finish
- The ash fell after the first third revealing a fairly centered flat burn cone
- Salt and butter continues through second third
- Spice and citrus pick up near final third
- Strength increased to settle at medium full
- Finished with spice and cedar
- Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 15 minutes
Overall, the Jeremy Jack 23 was a pleasurable smoke with unique flavor and aroma found in few cigars I have smoked. I especially enjoyed the butter and mint flavors and the butternut aroma was pleasing. I consider this a well-balanced cigar that had excellent flavor transitions and nuances. The Jeremy Jack 23 would make for an excellent desert cigar paired with a dram of Bailey Irish Cream or a White Russian.
