You know, when I get my hands on a cigar brand I have never had or just got acquainted with, I always do a little background research on it. I try to find a story, a reference to the name, or the meaning of the band. Today is no different, as I reached into the humidor to decide what the days first pleasure will be.
I chose the Jeremy Jack JJ15 cigar. I know you may ask who is Jeremy Jack, so off to cyberland I went and came across a fun little children’s play titled The Odyssey of Jeremy Jack. The play opens with Lou the Lizard interrupting Jeremy Jack the Turtle. The line in this opening reads as follows:
“Don’t bother me. Can’t you see I’m pacing and thinking, thinking, and pacing and worrying, worrying and thinking.” -The The Odyssey of Jeremy Jack: A Play for Children
We all know the famous title of the Robert Fulghum poem “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten” and this Jeremy Jack Play line made me think of what it must be like for a young cigar brand to enter the market with all the doom and gloom surrounding our industry. You learn how to persevere as a young child and do your best.
The Jeremy Jack Cigar Company has been doing just that since 2015, showing perseverance and surviving in a tough business climate. The difference here is that Jeremy Jack is a real person, not a talking turtle. His ambition is defined clearly on the company’s website:
“Jeremy Jack represents those smart and refined pleasures that satisfy the part of your soul that drives you… Jeremy Jack embodies our sophisticated, yet rugged lifestyle. We want better than good – we crave the exceptional. And while we callus our hands in style – in business, on a mountain, or the 18th hole – at the end of the day, it’s game on for pleasure.”
So pleasure it will be today. After hours of call, meetings, negotiations and solutions, it was time to relax my callus mind and turn to the pure pleasure of puffing on a fine cigar.
The Jeremy Jack JJ15
Today’s review is of the Jeremy Jack JJ15 cigar which I received from the company at this years IPCPR for purposes of sampling and reviewing.
The Jeremy Jack JJ15 blend is described as:
- Wrapper – Corojo
- Filler/Binder – Esteli and Jalapa Aganorsa Leaf
The Jeremy Jack JJ15 is available in one vitola, a 5 5/8 x 46 corona. It comes packaged in 20 – count boxes and has an MSRP of $7.30/cigar.
Pre-Light Examination
The first thing to catch your eye on the Jeremy Jack JJ15 is the oily and marbled medium brown corojo wrapper. It is light on veins and solid to the touch with a tight packing. The cigar is neatly finished with a triple cap and is adorned with a glossy white band with the Jeremy Jack logo centered in the middle. The red color in the logo leafs pop out and make you want to look at this cigar more closely.
Closer examination reveals a sugary spice aroma along the barrel along with sweet hay on the foot. The hay reminds of playing in a hay stack on my uncles farm upstate NY. Once I clipped the cap, the cold draw was gently restricted and pleased the palate with notes of pepper, grass, and sweetness. So far – So good.
It was time to light this delectable morsel up.
Cigar Review Notes
- The initial puffs delivered a nice dose of nasal cleaning pepper
- Well formed salt and pepper ash develops on a medium char line
- Pepper settles after 1/2 inch giving way to a chocolate aroma
- Flavor is being delivered through a thick creamy smoke
- Spice enters as the pepper tone downs
- Sweetness and vanilla notes follow draped with a dry leather component
- Ash fell after an inch
- Burn is a little off-center
- Pickled ginger enters in the second third
- Burn corrects without a touch up
- Strength starts picking up through second third
- Leather morphs into a dry cocoa powder with an underlying spice midway
- Lingering citrus on the palate
- Cedar notes enter end of second third
- Finishes with sugary sweetness and nut
- Medium to Full Strength
- Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 10 minutes
Overall, the Jeremy Jack JJ15 started off with nasal cleaning pepper but settled into a pleasant flavorful sensation. Unique notes of ginger and vanilla appeared through the journey keeping the palate pleased. This is certainly a cigar I would buy if available here in Florida. The price point of $7.30 makes it an easy choice in a crowded humidor. I would suggest it would pair very well with a spiced rum.
I have to say, Jeremy Jack would not have to think too hard about this product and I look forward to sampling the remainder of the line. If you want to know where to get Jeremy Jack Cigars just check their website retailers page.
