Jeremy Jack Salchichas Cigar Review – Fuerte, Picante, Sabroso

Jeremy Jack, a cigar brand I have had the pleasure of talking about over the past 11 months since I met them at last  years IPCPR. The company entered the market with a full portfolio of cigars and I think I have reviewed all but one of those over the past year. Today, I will complete the cycle and review a bold and unique cigar known as the Salchichas. What is a Salchichas you may ask? Well in this case, it is a cigar –  a short, fat, cigar. But if you know your Spanish, the name translates to sausage. Makes sense – eh? I mean sausages and cigars go together; right?

There is a little more to the name though, as these come in one 4 x 60 vitola packaged 12 to a box. Each row of six are linked foot to head with a leaf stem that gives the presentation a look like sausages in a meat market. The presentation goes one step further, as Jeremy Jack uses brown butcher paper to line the box. Of course, presentation is cool, but the real proof is in the cigar itself and after reviewing the rest of the Jeremy Jack line, I  would say the bar is set high on this one. The MSRP on these around $9.00 USD – How many pounds of Salchichas you want?

Jeremy Jack also set my expectation for these, by noting on the side of the box “Fuerte, Picante, Sabroso“, which translates into – Strong, Spicy, Tasty. Well then, by all means, bring it on!!

What makes this cigar so Fuerte, Picante, and Sabroso?

Well, like all great sausage, it’s the ingredients and Jeremy Jack describes the recipe as simply:

  • Wrapper -Nicaraguan  Corojo
  • Binder – Nicaraguan Aganorsa
  • Filler – Nicaraguan Aganorsa

The Jeremy Jack Salchichas, like all Jeremy Jack cigars are manufactured at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Pre-Light Examination

I already explained the packaging so let’s get right into the look of the cigar itself. The Jeremy Jack Salchichas is certainly a fine looking cigar. Though I only received one sample to review, the company was kind enough to include the stem that links the Salchichas together.

The cigar itself is a medium to dark brown beauty with a slight oily sheen. It is finished with a closed foot and quad cap (yes, a quad cap) that is completed with a tightly wound pig tail. Both the foot and cap would have the stem protruding from it, to link to the others in the box.

Jeremy Jack SalchichasThere is a large ruby-red band that wraps around the cigar with the white word “Salchichas” printed across it. This is as simple as the Jeremy Jack “El Chapo”

Passing it across the nasals I did not pick up much distinguishing pre-light aromas so it was time to slice the pig tail and see what the cold draw had to the offer. I was thinking of just biting the tail off but being a larger ring gauge I went with a cut instead.

The draw was a tad restricted and provided notes of crushed red pepper and a savory spice. I assume this is where it really begins to show its true self. After rolling it about and taking in the pre-light notes it was time to start cooking the Salchichas. I used my triple torch lighter to warm the foot as I drew in the first puffs of deep peppery smoke. Ouch!! I am not sure which hit me harder, the El Chapo or the Salchichas. Follow along as I finish breaking down Jeremy Jack Salchichas.

  • Pepper hits the nasals hard on initial light
  • Smoke is thick and palate filling
  • Savory spice notes (cumin) joins the pepper after a half-inch of burn
  • Light grey ash develops on a thick char line
  • The burn line starts to wave off after an inch
  • Mouth watering citrus notes add to the spice
  • Ultimately, the burn required a touch up after an inch and half
  • Pleasant Floral aroma is wafting from the foot – very close to Cubanesque
  • Things begin to change in the second half
  • A honey note starts to entice the palate
  • Charred oak joins the honey forming an enticing BBQ like flavor
  • The cumin note blends into the background and sea salt moves forward
  • The burn in the second half has been well-behaved
  • Flavor maintains to the nub
  • Medium to Full in Strength
  • Total Smoking Time was just shy of 1 hour

Overall, the Jeremy Jack Salchichas was an interesting cigar that started as a powerful pepper bomb and finished as a honey sweet BBQ morsel, which was OK for me, as I didn’t know how long I could take the pepper abuse on the nasals. The Honey was quite the welcome surprise in the second half. I was a bit concerned about the early burn that needed to be touched up but things settled quickly and the burn behaved down to the nub.  If you are looking for a place to purchase Jeremy Jack cigars, checkout the Underground Cigar Shop & Lounge website.

  • Just tried this cigar; Salchichas Red wrap. Fantastic stogie! About a 40 min smoke, great flavor, medium/bold and great draw. I would suggest it. Though hard to find online.
