Today I would like to offer a review of another cigar in the Micallef Cigars lineup. Over the past few months we introduced you to the bolder more fuller bodied cigars from Dr. Al Micallef and the Gomez Sanchez family including the 1RA Generacion Leyenda and the Herencia Maduro.
This time we are stepping it over to their Connecticut blend, which like the rest of the Micallef Cigars lineup, was introduced at last years IPCPR.
The Micallef Connecticut blend uses 4-year-old tobacco throughout and is described by the company as:
- Wrapper – Ecuadorian Connecticut
- Binder – Nicaraguan Habano
- Filler – Nicaraguan and Dominican
Once rolled they rest in the factory’s aging room for a minimum of 1 year before they are shipped to retailers.
The Micallef Connecticut is available in a single 5 x 52 robusto vitola and comes packaged 25 to a box. MSRP is $11.00 USD.
Pre-Light Examination
The Micallef Connecticut is a well constructed specimen of a cigar with a golden tan wrapper that has a slight sheen to it. The cigar is smooth to the touch and finished with a perfectly applied triple cap. There are practically no veins running through the gleaming wrapper.
There are two bands that adorn this cigar. The primary band is the standard Micallef band with the company’s logo centered in the middle and it uses a bright red background on the bottom with the words “Handcrafted by The Gomez Sanchez Family 1934“. The secondary band is a simple footer band using the same red and gold motif declaring this as the “Connecticut“.
As I ran the Micallef Connecticut across the nose I was greeted with a pleasant sweet tobacco aroma along barrel and the foot exuded notes buttered toast and a mild nut.
As I sliced the cap just above the lower line of the cap I gave it some cold draw puffs that had an excellent restriction which is something I have come to appreciate from Micallef Cigars. There is a mild pepper note on the draw along with some earthy notes to keep you enticed to fire it up.

- Once ignited, I am hit with peppery spice on the palate and retro-hale
- Rich full creamy smoke develops quickly
- Pepper grows on the nasals
- Sweetness enters after a half-inch of burn
- Burn line is straight and showing signs of decent oiling already
- Coffee notes enter near the one inch mark
- Excellent smoke ring texture
- Salt and pepper ash develops
- Butter enters near the end of first third
- Smoke has smoothed out wonderfully
- Dry fruit notes enter in the second third
- Ash held long and fell at the halfway point with a centered and slightly protruding burn cone
- Spice enters near the end of the second third
- Finishes with a earth and spice notes
- Mild to Medium in strength
- Total smoking time was just over one hour
Overall, the Micallef Connecticut was an immensely pleasant smoking experience that delivered on balanced flavor. The blend was carefully selected and the cigar was correctly aged to provide no classic Connecticut bitterness. In fact the sweetness and butter notes in this would have me describe this a refined cigar that most enthusiasts should enjoy. The burn had a pristine burn that showed the craft of the Gomez Sanchez family skills. This is a cigar that is perfect for the first cigar of the day with a hot cup of Joe or late in the evening with a sweet cordial.
