Today I would like to offer a review on another Micallef Cigars and Gomez Sanchez collaboration – the Gomez Sanchez 1RA Generacion Leyenda 1. It was part of the overall collection presented by Micallef Cigars at t his years IPCPR. You can read the story of Micallef Cigars and their relation to the famed Gomez Sanchez family here.
The Micallef Cigars website discusses this classic cigar:
“A true Cuban classic blend originated by the late great Don Pedro F. Gómez, perfectly handcrafted today by his grandsons, Edel and Joel.
In a distinguished vitola preferred by their grandfather, reinvented and remade without molds and by hand, and patented by the 3rd Generation, this blend is made with some of the finest leaves in the world, aged 5 years. Rested for 1 year after manufacture, it offers an exclusive aroma of thick hardwoods and a smooth draw with a perfectly balanced finish. Get comfortable in your favorite chair and prepare yourself for an invigorating 2 hours of pleasure — authentic Cuban style.”
The Gomez Sanchez 1RA Generacion Leyenda 1 is available in one vitola, a 7.5 x 54 Taper Figurado.
The decadent bend is described as:
- Wrapper – 5 Year Old Ecuadorian Habano
- Binder – 5 Year Old Nicaraguan
- Filler – 5 Year Old Nicaraguan, Dominican, and Honduran
The packaging of the Gomez Sanchez 1RA Generacion Leyenda 1 is unique in that it comes in an open coffin that is shaped to the vitola itself. They come packaged in 10 – count boxes with a prideful presentation.
Pre-Light Examination
The Gomez Sanchez 1RA Generacion Leyenda 1 is certainly a beautiful cigar to look at. It has a medium brown, silky smooth, oily wrapper and is finished with a blunt point tapered tip.
The cigar is adorned with three bands – the primary band notes it is a Gomez Sanchez creation and identifies it as 1st Generacion. The date 1934 is printed below. The Secondary band identities it as the Leyenda. There is a footer band also that declares the relationship between the Micallef and Gomez Sanchez families with clasped arms and hands.
Running it across the nose you are greeted with a delicious sweet fermented leaf along the barrel and enticing notes of hay, floral, and pepper off the foot.
I used my double blade Palio cutter to cut just a small amount of the head on the cigar. I figured this vitola is designed to have a decent restriction with that type of cut. My sense was right as the draw was perfect and delivered pre-light notes of pepper and earth.
So far, the Gomez Sanchez 1RA Generacion Leyenda 1 is going to be quite the elegant smoke. So I sat back in the Stogie Press lounge and toasted the foot and took the first few puffs. The early light offered a smooth and balanced smoke from the very first puff with a little pepper, a little cedar, a little fruit, and a pleasing roasted nut aroma. This is a special cigar!
