Black Chazaro Habana Cigar Review – A Dream Kept Alive

Here is a brand a good many of you may not have heard of – Black Chazaro. This is a truly artisanal company  that prides itself on quality and lot of patience, care and passion. Based out Queretaro, Mexico the brand goes back about 18 years ago when the family had a tobacco shop and the Chazaro brand of cigars,. Unfortunately the shop had to close due to lack of infrastructure but the dream remained alive. About three years ago, the family invited two San Andrés, Veracruz purists to collaborate with them. We planted tobacco in Peñamiller and began to test the blends until they found what they felt would be a premium cigar offering to the international market. The tobacco used in their current Cházaro Cigars lines (Black and Habana) comes from San Andres Tuxtla, Veracruz.

I met the Black Chazaro team at this years IPCPR and received a couple of samples of two of their new blends, for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press. There are three blends offered; a Mexican San Andres puro (Black), Connecticut (Golden) and a Habana. The Black and the Habana are available now and the Golden is yet to be released. Both Cházaro Cigars are mexican puros (all the leaf is grown and harvested in México), and the Black Cházaro is also a San Andrés Negro puro. Today I would like to offer a review of the Black Chazaro Habano blend.

The other blend I received – the Black – will  be reviewed later this week.

The cigar being reviewed has been in my humidor for four months prior to the review.

The Black Chazaro Habano

The Black Chazaro Habana blend is described as:

• Wrapper – Habana
• Binder – San Andrés Negro
• Filler – San Andrés Negro

The Black Chazaro Habana is available in 3 vitolas and packaged in both 25-count bundles and 10-count white lacquered boxes:

• Robusto – 5 1/16 x 50
• Toro – 6.1 x 52
• Torpedo – 6.1 x 52

Black Chazaro cigars are manufactured at the company’s modern factory, Real Fábrica de Tabaco, SA de CV located in the municipality of Ezequiel Montes,

Pre-Light Examination

The Black Chazaro Habana is a well constructed cigar from the looks of it. It has a medium tan color to the wrapper that is slightly waxy and finished with a well applied double cap. The wrapper has some marbling to it along with a just a few veins.

The band that adorns the cigar uses a black, white, and gold motif with the white word Black Chazaro printed a black background. The golden word Habana is printed on top on a white background.

Running the barrel across the nose it was clean with no distinguishing aroma but the foot offered notes of hay and charred wood.

Once the cap is removed using my double-bladed Palio cutter, the cold draw was restricted just to my liking and delivered notes of earth and BBQ. Certainly a unique start for a cigar.

With the preliminaries out-of-the-way it was time to fire it up and see what it offered.

Cigar Review Notes

• Mild pepper to start
• Pepper recedes nicely to the background and opens up with oak and fruit notes
• Sweetness enters after half-inch
• Light grey ash rests on a thin char line
• Full volume of smoke
• Dry leather enters
• Savory spice and meaty notes find their way in at the start of the second third
• Oak morphs into a Cedar note near the midway point
• Flaky but long ash
• Ash fell at half way with a well centered and pointed burn cone
• Cedar intensifies
• Strength is solid medium
• Spicy nut aroma
• Peanut graces the palate at the end of the second third
• Peppery spice completes the journey through the final
• Total Smoking Time was right around one hour

Overall, the Black Chazaro Habana was a pleasantly enjoyable and well constructed cigar with a complex flavor profile that evolved well throughout the burn. As I mentioned, this is a company that you may never heard, but they have been working hard since the IPCPR and are now in a number of shops across the US including:
