Cigar News: Micallef Cigars Severs Ties With Big Online Cigar Shops

In a bold move and true to the self described mantra of the company, Micallef Cigars has announced they are severing sales with online shops, Cigars International, Thompson Cigars, Meier & Dutch, and Cigar.com.

Al Micallef, Founder of Micallef Cigars. stated in a press release:

“Brick & Mortar stores are the heart of the cigar community; they are incredibly important for our Industry. 2020 has been a difficult year for us all. Together with our retail partners we continue innovating to better serve our consumers and Ambassadors in an excellent manner!”

The company recognizes the importance of online sales for their customers, who do not have a readily accessible retail partner. They will continue to support  Brick & Mortar shops who sell both in their store and online.

Dan Thompson, President of Micallef Cigars stated in the press release:

“Cigars International sees themselves as the Amazon or Walmart of the premium cigar industry. We know the damage their corporate idols have done to Main Street businesses across America. We will not be part of their strategy. We are focused on the success of Brick & Mortar shops which are the foundation of the cigar communities we love!”

Back in March of 2020, Micallef Cigars announced a program known as “Ultimate Inventory” that was designed to address the issue of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The program was designed to offer their Micallef Partner Program (MPP) retailers the opportunity to sell Micallef boxes and bundles of any product in the Micallef Cigars inventory, even if the retailer did not carry the specific line. Micallef handles the shipping and absorbed some of the shipping costs to ship direct to the consumer.

The Micallef Partner Program (MPP) was part of the company’s ongoing commitment to Brick & Mortar retailers that they announced in an open letter to the industry in January 2020, outlining a set of promises to their retail partners. Among them, a commitment to bring their partners innovative revenue models.

In closing, the company stated:

“Micallef Cigars continues to increase their investment in Brick and Mortar shops to drive retail sales. The classic in-person retail event has evolved into a Hybrid event in the store and online. Retailers grow their customer base by connecting to a national audience of Micallef Ambassadors.

Finally, a consumer-focused Tasting Passport enables discovery and enjoyment of the 16 different blends available. As consumers complete and submit their Passport, they are eligible for prizes including gift certificates to their favorite Brick & Mortar retailer.”
