For this review, 2 samples of the Selección No. 5 Parejo were smoked which were received from Steve Saka at the IPCPR for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.
Pre-Light Examination
The Sin Compromiso Selección No. 5 is soft boxed pressed Parejo that has a dark brown wrapper with a fine oily sheen, marbling, and a few veins. It is has a silky feel to it and is solid to the touch from head to foot. A well applied double cap completes the presentation.
A single band, that has a unique green and white logo made up of a 4-way cross overlayed on a circle adorns the cigar. There is a cedar sleeve that covers the cigar from the foot to the band and has the phrase “Sin Compromiso” printed in green running the length. The Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust logo is printed at the bottom.
Running the Sin Compromiso along the nose I picked up a light sweet aroma along the barrel and an enticing has a BBQ wood note off the foot.
I proceeded to slice the cap and move to the cold draw which had a perfect restriction and notes of hickory, meat, and earth. There was a sprinkle of pepper on the lips as I rolled it about.
The pre-light was what I have come to expect from Steve Saka and as much as I would like to just chomp on this for another twenty minutes it was was time to fire it up. I chose to ignite the cedar sleeve as I would a spill and warm the foot with the soft flame.
Cigar Review Notes
- First light offered pepper on the palate and nose
- A solid white ash quickly evolves on a thin char line
- A touch of chocolate enters after an inch of burn along with a woody accompaniment
- Sweetness enters near end of the first third
- Ash fell after a solid inch plus of burn, revealing a well-formed and centered burn cone
- A medium volume of smoke graces the palate
- Grapefruit citrus notes are building along with a hint of dry leather
- Burnt Caramel aroma wafts off the foot
- A hint of bitterness (Chicory?) enters
- As I let it lay for a few minutes and came back to it, the combustion maintained
- Leather notes increase
- Aroma shifts to a spice deep into
second third - Caramel sweetness enters masking the bitterness
- Strength hits medium to full
- Earth (Loam?) notes and an underlying bitterness enter in the final
- Maple syrup aroma moves in the final
- Total Smoking Time was just shy of 2 hours
We rate the Sin Compromiso a solid 95. This cigar is just as Steve Saka described it – complex and flavorful with shifting notes and aromas through the almost two hours of smoking pleasure. It had a pristine burn from foot to nub. I have to say, I had to go find some Chicory to know what it tastes like and yes that is what the bitterness is in the profile. The only point I deducted for this cigar was the medium volume of smoke. I would have preferred a bit more volume to bring out the flavors more.
