Cigar Review: Providencia Cigars Infringement – Rated 91

The Infringement is a cigar offering from the little boutique cigar company in Keller, Texas – Providencia Cigars. The name was chosen due to an previous naming that was too close to another brand and would have resulted in a copy-write infringement. So the Providencia Cigars team decided to keep it simple, yet bold, and renamed it the Infringement.

Pre-Light Examination

I am a fan of lanceros, I like the fact you get maximum wrapper flavor from them, so if a fine leaf is selected it can offer a truly pleasant smoking experience. The Providencia Infringement, is a nicely constructed lancero with a dark brown, marbled, and slightly gritty wrapper. It is neatly finished with a simple twist cap. The Infringement seems to be decently packed and solid from head to foot.

There are two bands that adorn the cigar. The primary band is big and bold, covering a good portion of the barrel. It uses a white and red motif with the word “INFRINGEMENT” stated front and center in red on the white background. Off to left side, is the Providencia Cigars logo. There is also a medium blue satin footer band to complete the presentation.

As I ran the Infringement along the nose, I noted a lightly pungent aroma along the barrel and enticing natural tobacco sweetness off the foot.

I snipped the cap with my double blade cutter and proceeded to give it a few cold draws that I found to have a fine restriction which bringing out the pre-notes of a growing peppery spice and hints of earth and sweetness.

I chose to use the soft flame of a cedar spill to ignite this one so as not to over scorch the narrow foot. The first notes were a pleasant floral and pepper sensation. Follow along as I burn the Infringement from Providencia Cigars to an ash pile.

  • Floral and pepper notes grace the palate to start
  • Pepper is heavy on the nose during the first few draws
  • Light grey ash forms on a thin char line
  • Floral aroma begins to waft after a half inch of burn
  • Mild wave develops early on
  • Off centered cone is revealed after the first early ash drop
  • Earthiness enters at the end of the first quarter
  • Burn begins to correct itself
  • Full volume of smoke
  • Spice recedes to the background as bitter dark chocolate notes emerge
  • Fruit citrus notes join the mix
  • Settles into a fruit and floral profile end of second quarter
  • Stronger Bitter notes enter in the 3rd quarter
  • Ash drops often but never needs to be re-lit
  • Spice re-emerging deep in 3rd quarter down through the final
  • Medium to Full in Strength
  • Total Smoking Time was 1 hour and 35 minutes

Overall, the Providencia Cigars Infringement Lancero was a decently performing cigar that had a pleasing array of flavors, though it did have a rather pronounced bitterness in the 3rd quarter, after which it was more of a spice bomb down to the finish. The ash fell often, so be aware to tap that ash consistently through the burn. When the ash fell the first time there was a rather off centered burn cone. In the end, if you are in the market for lanceros, this is worth picking up a fiver and we rate it a 91.

Point Deductions: (-1) Off Centered Cone; (-1) Off burn early on; (-2) ash falls often; (-1) Pronounced bitter notes in 3rd quarter
