Cigar Review: Black Works Studio Culture Vulture Robusto – Rated 95

Black Works Studio (BLK WKS) has never been a brand afraid to push the boundaries of cigar design, and its latest limited-edition release, the Culture Vulture, certainly continues that philosophy. Handcrafted at Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua, the Culture Vulture was announced in September 2026 and began shipping to select retailers later that month.

Visually, this is an unusual cigar. Culture Vulture incorporates three Ecuadorian wrapper tobaccos—Maduro, Connecticut and Candela—over an Ecuador Habano binder and Nicaraguan filler. James Brown, creator of BLK WKS and partner at Fábrica Oveja Negra, describes the wrapper treatment as “an ombré-style presentation intended to transition through contrasting colors.”

Culture Vulture is offered as a limited edition in three vitolas, all packaged in 20-count boxes: Oveja Negra Brands

  • Panatela: 6 × 42 — MSRP $13.50
  • Robusto: 5.25 × 50 — MSRP $14.00
  • Toro: 6 × 48 — MSRP $14.50

For this review, I sampled 3 Black Works Studio Culture Vulture Robustos which I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Culture Vulture is a nicely crafted cigar featuring a toothy Maduro wrapper with overlays of green Candela and dark-tan Connecticut leaf, creating a distinctive appearance. The cigar is firm to the touch from head to foot with no noticeable soft spots. The foot is closed with Candela leaf, while the head is finished with a well-applied cap featuring the Connecticut leaf.

The Culture Vulture band carries the gritty, urban-inspired design one expects from Black Works Studio. A predominantly gloss-black background is bordered along the top and bottom by thin metallic-gold lines. Centered on the band is CULTURE VULTURE in large, distressed gold lettering, with black works studio printed underneath in smaller type.

The right side breaks dramatically from the restrained black-and-gold presentation with colorful graffiti-style artwork of a vulture head, incorporating white, pink, green, blue, yellow and red. The layered street-art imagery has an almost spray-painted appearance.

Running the cigar along the nose, I picked up sweet and pungent barnyard notes along the barrel, while the closed foot offered a more earthy aroma.

I sliced the cap at the shoulder of the cigar. As expected with the closed foot, the initial cold draw was tight. Even with the restriction, I was able to pick out notes of wood and natural sweetness.

The Cigar Journey

Once fired up, the Culture Vulture opened with herbal notes and rich pepper. Once the burn moved past the closed Candela-covered foot, the herbal character quickly receded and the pepper came on heavy, especially through the retrohale. Construction was excellent from the start. A light-gray ash began stacking dimes above a thin and even burn line. The draw smoothed out nicely once through the closed foot and produced a full volume of smoke with each puff.

A caramel essence soon joined the early profile, adding some sweetness against the lingering pepper. As I worked through the first third, coffee and cream entered the mix, rounding out the profile as the pepper gradually receded. Deep in the first third, a rich dark-chocolate-syrup note developed and carried the cigar toward the second third.

Moving through the second third, a hint of umami entered the profile, providing another layer to the experience. Meanwhile, the construction continued to impress. The ash remained solid and continued stacking dimes over a beautifully thin and even burn line. It really doesn’t get much better than this from a burn perspective. The ash finally fell well past the midway point in a beautiful solid chunk, revealing a well-formed and centered burn cone.

The profile remained nicely rounded as spice began to develop, accompanied by lingering notes of mild fruit and chocolate. Deep in the second third, a slight tannic quality emerged, offering some contrast to the sweeter elements of the blend.

As the Culture Vulture entered the final third, the profile transitioned toward wood, earth and spice. Deep in the final third came one last interesting transition. A distinct grapefruit-peel note emerged, adding a mildly bitter citrus quality that carried the cigar through to the end.

The Culture Vulture finished at medium-to-full strength, with a total smoking time of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Final Analysis

The Black Works Studio Culture Vulture delivered an engaging journey that evolved considerably from beginning to end. The initial herbal character quickly gave way to a pepper-heavy opening before the cigar settled into a sweeter combination of caramel, coffee, cream and dark chocolate.

The second third was particularly interesting, with umami, fruit, chocolate and spice creating a nicely rounded profile before the cigar moved toward its earthier and woodier conclusion. That late grapefruit-peel note provided an unexpected finishing touch.

Where this cigar particularly impressed me was its construction. The draw was smooth after getting through the closed foot, smoke production was plentiful, and the burn remained remarkably thin and even. The long, stacking-dimes ash and beautifully centered burn cone were about as good as one could ask for.

The Culture Vulture is not simply relying on its eye-catching three-wrapper construction to get attention. There is plenty happening beneath that unusual exterior, with a profile that moves through pepper, caramel, coffee, cream, dark chocolate, umami, fruit, wood, earth, spice and finally grapefruit peel.

At $13.50–$14.50 depending on vitola, this limited edition offers both an unusual presentation and a complex smoking experience backed by exceptional construction.
