Blackbird Cigar Co. celebrates its tenth anniversary with the Pura Raza de Quisqueya, a cigar that pays homage to the Dominican Republic’s rich tobacco heritage. and is intended as a tribute to master blender Papo “El Caballo” who the company notes as “the man whose hands and heart helped shape the very foundation of Blackbird”.
The company stated:
“For over a decade, Papo ‘El Caballo’ has embodied the spirit of dedication and excellence,” the company wrote in a press release. “His tireless work ethic, often seen in the factory seven days a week, throughout the entire year, reflects a level of passion that transcends craftsmanship and enters the realm of artistry. Every blend he has touched carries his signature discipline, intuition, and love for the tobacco. This release stands as a heartfelt expression of gratitude for his invaluable contribution to Blackbird’s story.”
Produced at Blackbird Dominicana in Tamboril, this (6 x 52) box-pressed Toro has a blend described as:

According to Jonas Santana, CEO and co-founder of Blackbird Cigar Co.:
“We want smokers to approach the cigar with an open mind, allowing them to fully experience and appreciate its character before forming any judgments based on its composition, that is why we did not disclose the binder and fillers.”
The Pura Raza de Quisqueya showcases the country’s ability to produce a refined and balanced smoking experience. Rather than chasing intensity, the blend focuses on nuance, smooth transitions, and impeccable construction. It is hand crafted at the company’s Tabacalera Robles factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. Only 500 boxes of 10 were produced though the company does plan to release them annually in limited quantities.
The cigars are packed in 10-count boxes with an MSRP of $16.00 per cigar ($160.00 per box).
Pre-Light Examination
The Pura Raza de Quisqueya wears an attractive golden tan wrapper that is remarkably clean, showing virtually no visible veins. A light natural sheen gives the leaf a healthy appearance, while the box press and expertly applied cap reflect quality craftsmanship. In hand, the cigar feels firmly packed from head to foot with no soft spots or inconsistencies.
The cigar is adorned with a single band that is finished in an elegant cream, gold, and bronze color palette. At its center is an oval medallion featuring Blackbird’s signature bird silhouette above the Pura Raza de Quisqueya name and Connecticut designation. Framing the centerpiece are vintage-style tobacco field illustrations, while ornate scrollwork borders add a classic feel. A cluster of tobacco blossoms decorates the lower left, and the Blackbird Cigar Co. logo anchors the bottom of the band. The overall presentation is refined and understated, complementing the cigar’s traditional Dominican character.
Running the cigar along the nose reveals mild barnyard and baking spice aromas from the wrapper. The foot offers a pleasant combination of butternut and gentle spice.
Using my CigarMedics Baller cutter, I opened the cap cleanly. The cold draw proved slightly more open than my personal preference, but it delivered a growing wave of refined black pepper accompanied by a subtle tangy note that lingered pleasantly on the palate.
The Cigar Journey
I brought the Pura Raza de Quisqueya to life using the soft flame of a cedar spill, allowing the cigar to ease into the journey naturally. The draw was smooth from the very first puff as measured black pepper introduced the profile before tangy fruit notes quickly brightened the palate. A light gray ash developed atop a medium-thick, even char line while the smoke maintained a refreshing character and a notably clean finish.
As the burn settled into the first third, the tangy fruit gradually became the dominant flavor while the pepper receded into a supporting role. The ash stacked beautifully in a classic “stacking dimes” formation, reinforcing the cigar’s excellent construction and combustion.
Entering the second third, touches of natural sweetness and cedar joined the profile before buttery notes added another layer of richness. The ash finally released during this stage, revealing a well-formed burn cone while the char line remained remarkably even. Refined spice quietly wrapped itself around the core flavors, tying everything together without ever becoming overpowering.
The final third remained true to the cigar’s balanced nature. The buttery sweetness, cedar, and refined spice continued with excellent consistency while a pleasant nutty note emerged to round out the profile. The lingering spice remained present through the finish, providing a satisfying conclusion without upsetting the cigar’s composure.
Construction was outstanding from start to finish. The burn remained straight without requiring a single touch-up, and the draw stayed consistent throughout despite being slightly more open than I generally prefer. Total smoking time came in at 1 hour and 20 minutes, with strength settling comfortably in the mild-to-medium range.
Final Analysis
The Blackbird Cigar Co. Pura Raza de Quisqueya isn’t a cigar built around dramatic transitions or overwhelming strength. Instead, it succeeds through refinement, consistency, and balance. The progression from pepper to tangy fruit, complemented by cedar, butter, sweetness, refined spice, and finally a touch of nuttiness, creates an engaging smoking experience that never feels forced.
Its flawless burn, effortless smoking characteristics, and approachable strength make it an excellent choice for a first cigar of the day or an afternoon smoke when you’re looking for complexity delivered with restraint rather than intensity.
