Cigar Review: DBL Cigars Domi-Nica Toro – Rated 94

DBL Cigars, short for Dominican Big Leaguer Cigars, has built a reputation for producing premium handcrafted cigars under the direction of founder and master blender Francisco Almonte. Operating out of the Dominican Republic, the company has developed a portfolio of blends that showcase Almonte’s passion for tobacco and his commitment to quality construction.

One of the company’s interesting offerings is the DBL Domi-Nica Toro, a Nicaraguan puro handcrafted in the Dominican Republic. The cigar brings together Nicaraguan tobaccos in a blend designed to deliver flavor, balance, and complexity.

For this review, I sampled the 2 of the DBL Domi-Nica Toros, which which I received from the company for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The DBL Cigars Domi-Nica Toro presented itself with an attractive milk chocolate brown wrapper that was silky smooth to the touch and exhibited a pleasing oily sheen. The cigar featured a nicely executed oval box press with excellent construction and no noticeable soft spots along the barrel. The wrapper was practically veinless, contributing to its refined appearance, while an expertly applied triple cap completed the presentation.

The DBL Cigars Domi-Nica Toro features an attractive two-band presentation that combines white, gold, and deep blue colors with imagery celebrating its Nicaraguan tobacco heritage and Dominican manufacturing roots. The primary band features a prominent oval-shaped centerpiece framed in metallic gold, with a white inner border surrounding a deep blue shield. The gold DBL NICARAGUA lettering sits above an illustration of a volcano rising against a blue landscape, representing Nicaragua’s volcanic geography and rich tobacco-growing soils.

At the bottom of the shield, the flags of the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua appear side by side, symbolizing the connection between the cigar’s Dominican craftsmanship and Nicaraguan tobaccos. Decorative gold tobacco leaves crown the shield, while additional ornamental elements complete the lower portion. Extending from either side of the centerpiece are white wings bordered in metallic gold. Delicate gold leaf motifs decorate each wing, while the words “HECHO A MANO” (handmade) appear on the right side.

The secondary band is a slender white strip framed by metallic gold borders with an embossed dot pattern. Centered on the band is the elegantly scripted name “Domi-Nica”, accompanied by small decorative leaves. Beneath it, the phrase “The best of the world” appears in white lettering.

Running the barrel along the nose, I detected a subtle floral note, while the foot offered inviting aromas of vanilla bean and fruit.

I sliced the cap and proceeded with the cold draw, which proved to be just as pleasant as the pre-light aromas. The draw delivered notes of natural tobacco sweetness complemented by refined red pepper flakes.

Interestingly, with each successive cold puff, the pepper became more pronounced, gradually warming the palate and providing an intriguing preview of what was to come.

Overall, the pre-light examination was impressive, combining excellent construction, inviting aromatics, and a flavorful cold draw.

Smoking Journey

First Third

I fired up the DBL Cigars Domi-Nica Toro using my single-flame torch and was immediately greeted by a burst of rich peppery notes on the nose, complemented by pleasant buttery notes on the palate. A light grey ash began forming with an attractive stacking-dimes appearance, resting on a medium-thick char line. The burn was developing nicely and providing an encouraging start to the journey.

After approximately an inch of burn, the initial pepper intensity began to subside, allowing dry fruit notes to emerge. As the cigar progressed through the first third, those notes evolved into a brighter fruit character, adding another dimension to the profile. The overall experience smoothed out beautifully as the flavors settled into a more balanced presentation.

The ash eventually fell in a substantial chunk, revealing a well-formed burn cone. Adding to the enjoyment was a pleasant maple syrup aroma that provided an appealing complement to the evolving fruit and pepper notes. The first third offered an enjoyable progression, moving from an assertive peppery opening into a smoother, fruit-forward experience.

Second Third

Moving into the second third, the Domi-Nica Toro continued to offer a smooth and flavorful experience, with the fruit notes remaining a central component of the profile. Around the midway point, a touch of leather entered the mix, providing additional depth and a subtle savory quality that complemented the brighter fruit notes.

Deeper into the second third, a mild citrus-like bitterness began to develop. This introduced a slightly sharper edge to the profile without overwhelming the other flavors. As the cigar approached the final third, the pepper notes began to resurge, bringing renewed intensity to the experience. The fruit remained ever-present, while the pleasant maple syrup aroma continued to accompany the journey.

Final Third

The final third brought a welcome combination of sweetness and cream, rounding out the renewed pepper notes and lingering fruit character. A hint of earthiness also entered the profile, adding another layer of complexity as the cigar approached its conclusion.

The interplay of fruit, sweetness, cream, and pepper provided a satisfying finish to a cigar that had demonstrated enjoyable transitions throughout the smoking experience.

The Domi-Nica Toro maintained a solid medium strength throughout the journey, never becoming overly aggressive on the palate. The total smoking time was 1 hour and 30 minutes, providing a satisfying and flavorful experience down to the nub.

Final Analysis

The DBL Cigars Domi-Nica Toro is a fine example of how Nicaraguan tobaccos can be brought together to create a flavorful and balanced smoking experience without overwhelming strength.

What stood out most was the cigar’s progression. The initial peppery opening gradually gave way to brighter fruit notes, while the maple syrup aroma added an inviting dimension to the experience. The introduction of leather and mild citrus bitterness in the second third provided additional complexity before the profile settled into a pleasing combination of sweetness, cream, fruit, and earthiness in the final third.

Construction was another positive aspect of the experience, with an attractive stacking-dimes ash and a well-formed burn cone adding to the enjoyment.

At a solid medium strength, the Domi-Nica Toro offers enough flavor and complexity to keep an experienced enthusiast engaged while remaining approachable for those who enjoy a balanced Nicaraguan blend.

This is certainly a cigar I would consider smoking again, especially when looking for a medium-strength experience with a fruit-forward profile, natural sweetness, and enjoyable aromatics. I feel this is a box buy.
