Cigar Review: Lord Baltimore Nicaragua Robusto – Rated 92

Some of you may not know of the small boutique brand – Lord Baltimore Cigars. The company was originally founded in 2011, but was a Maryland exclusive until 2023, when the company decided to go national with the their distribution. With a number of blends in their portfolio, I would like to offer a review of the Lord Baltimore Nicaragua line.

Lord Baltimore Nicaragua Robusto

One key thing to know about this particular blend is that it is a Nicaraguan Habano Puro. Yes, your heard that right – the wrapper, binder, and filler are all habano leaf grown in Nicaragua. The tobacco was grown from 2007, 2008, and 2009. This is the first ever cigar to be a Nicaraguan Habano Puro. The cigars are hand crafted at the Plasencia factory in Nicaragua.

The Lord Baltimore Nicaragua is expressed in 4 different vitolas, each packaged in 20-count boxes.

  • Robusto (5 x 52) – MSRP $9.99
  • Toro (6 x 52) -MSRP $10.29
  • Churchill (7 x 50) – MSRP $10.99
  • Belicoso (6 1/8 x 52) – MSRP $11.99

The blend, as noted, is simply

  • Wrapper – Nicaraguan Habano
  • Binder – Nicaraguan Habano
  • Filler – Nicaraguan Habano

For this review, I sampled the Lord Baltimore Nicaragua Robusto

Pre-Light Examination

The cigar features a dark tan wrapper with a mild tooth, a double cap, firm packing, and a light oily sheen.

I will say, I love bands on cigars especially when the imagery tells a story. The Lord Baltimore did not disappoint in the area.

Two bands adorn the cigar, all utilizing a regal royal blue and gold motif. There is also a large outer white and gold sleeve. The primary band prominently displays a sailing ship at its center. Beneath the ship is the name Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore) along with the years 1605 and 1675, marking his birth and death. The bottom of the band bears the name Lord Baltimore, while the top references the Ark and Dove, the two ships associated with the Maryland expedition that crossed the Atlantic and landed in the Chesapeake Bay. Cecil effectively became the 2nd Baron Baltimore after the passing of his father, the 1st Baron Baltimore, prior to the voyage. The secondary band simply states “Lord Baltimore,” while the outer sleeve identifies the cigar as the Nicaragua blend.

As for pre-light aromas, the foot exudes buttery pepper notes, while the barrel offers only faint aromas during the pre-light inspection.

I straight cut the cap across the shoulder of the cigar and gave it some cold draw puffs that revealed an excellent draw with just the right amount of resistance, delivering notes of leather, fruit, and cinnamon spice.

Cigar Review

The cigar opens with a smooth and inviting profile led by tangy fruit notes. Thick, chewy smoke immediately coats the palate, while a light-gray ash forms atop a thin char line. Early in the burn, a slight metallic note appears, adding an unusual edge to the profile. As the cigar progresses through the first third, coffee notes begin to emerge, adding depth and richness to the experience. During the journey the ash dropped in decent chunk revealing well formed and centered burn cone.

Moving into the second third, a touch of natural sweetness develops and helps soften the profile. Earthy dark chocolate notes soon follow, providing a richer and more grounded character. Deep into the second third, the spice level increases slightly, bringing additional complexity to the evolving blend.

Moving into the final third, touches of cream and lingering spice carry the cigar to a balanced and satisfying finish. This medium strength medium body cigar lasted a good 1 hour and 25 minutes from foot to nub.

Final Analysis

Overall, the Lord Baltimore Nicaragua delivers a smooth and balanced smoking experience highlighted by evolving layers of tangy fruit, coffee, earthy dark chocolate, and lingering spice. The cigar produces thick, chewy smoke with solid construction throughout, while the natural sweetness that develops in the second third helps round out the profile nicely. Although a slight metallic note appears early in the burn, the blend settles comfortably into richer and more satisfying territory as it progresses. The combination of historical presentation, refined transitions, and approachable complexity makes this an enjoyable cigar that rewards a relaxed and attentive smoking pace.
