Cigar Review: Powstanie Sumatra Box Pressed Gran Toro – Rated 90

Powstanie Cigars expanded its core portfolio in 2026 with the introduction of the Powstanie Sumatra, a box-pressed line that debuted at the 2026 Premium Cigar Association Trade Show in New Orleans.

Produced for Pospiech Cigars at the Fábrica de Tabacos Nica Sueño S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, the Powstanie Sumatra adds an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper to the company’s portfolio. Beneath that wrapper is a dual-binder combination of Mexican and Pennsylvania tobaccos surrounding a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers.

Pre-Light Examination

The Powstanie Box Pressed Sumatra Gran Toro presented with a silky-smooth, medium-brown wrapper displaying some excellent marbling throughout the leaf. The wrapper was practically veinless, providing a clean and refined appearance. The cigar felt fairly well packed, with just a slight give along the barrel when gently pressed. A neatly applied double cap completed the presentation.

The Powstanie Sumatra features a clean, understated two-band presentation built around a silver and deep burgundy color scheme. The primary band uses a broad textured metallic-silver background with Powstanie’s distinctive burgundy “P” and downward-pointing arrow emblem prominently centered. Ornamental burgundy scrollwork frames the logo above and below, adding a touch of Old World styling while keeping the overall design uncluttered.

Directly beneath it sits a narrow secondary band identifying the blend. It carries the same metallic-silver background, bordered along the top and bottom with reflective burgundy-red foil. “SUMATRA” is printed prominently across the center in burgundy block lettering.

Running the barrel beneath my nose, I detected a very pleasant sweet curing-barn aroma, while the foot offered an inviting vanilla like sweetness.

I sliced the cap cleanly across the shoulder and gave the cigar some cold-draw puffs. The draw was spot-on, offering just the right amount of restriction. That characteristic natural Sumatra sweetness greeted the palate first, followed by a light sprinkle of pepper.

With the pre-light examination complete, it was time to fire up the Powstanie Box Pressed Sumatra Gran Toro and see what the blend had to offer.

Cigar Journey

I used my single-flame torch to ignite the foot and draw in the first puffs. The cigar opened with an interesting combination of cinnamon and sweetness. A light-gray ash quickly began developing above a slightly jagged char line. Smoke production was excellent, delivering a full volume of smoke through an easy draw. The early finish was a tad sharp on the palate, adding a bit of an edge to the otherwise sweet opening profile.

As the cigar moved deeper into the first third, fruit and leather joined the mix. These additions gave the profile some extra dimension while complementing the underlying sweetness and spice. The ash eventually dropped, revealing an off-centered burn cone.

Moving into the second third, an uneven burn began to develop. I gave it some time to correct itself, but eventually a minor touch-up was required to get the burn back on track. By the midway point, the spice began to ratchet up, bringing additional intensity to the profile.

Deeper into the second third, a pleasant toasted caramel note developed. This was followed by a touch of cream, which helped soften and round out the increasing spice. The retrohale had also noticeably smoothed by this point, making for a more refined experience through the nose.

Moving into the final third, the profile shifted once again as bitter notes began to grow. The increasing bitterness gradually displaced some of the sweeter caramel and creamy qualities experienced during the second third and remained part of the profile through the finish.

I brought the journey to a close after 1 hour and 25 minutes, with the Powstanie Box Pressed Sumatra Gran Toro finishing at a solid medium strength.

Final Analysis

The Powstanie Box Pressed Sumatra Gran Toro delivered a fairly enjoyable medium-strength journey that showcased the naturally sweet and spicy character of its Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. It opened with a lively combination of cinnamon and sweetness, before developing layers of fruit and leather as the first third progressed. The cigar really found its stride in the second third. An increase in spice was balanced nicely by toasted caramel and cream, while the retrohale became noticeably smoother. This was the most flavorful and well-rounded portion of the experience.

While the draw remained easy and smoke production was excellent throughout, the burn was not quite as cooperative. An off-centered burn cone and developing off-burn eventually required a touch-up. The final third also lost some of the refinement of the middle portion as bitterness began to build and overshadow the sweeter notes.

Overall, the Powstanie Sumatra Gran Toro offered good complexity, distinct transitions, and an especially enjoyable middle third. The burn issues and bitter finish kept it from reaching the next level, but there was still plenty to appreciate during the 1-hour-and-25-minute journey. This is worth trying a fiver.
