Cigar Review: Providencia Cigars Speakeasy Corona – Rated 92

Today I take a look at another special release from the little company down in Texas that keeps cranking out some quality craft. I am speaking of Providencia Cigars and their Speakeasy Corona. A Speakeasy was an illegal establishments that sold alcoholic beverages during the American prohibition era. They were called “Speakeasy” because the patrons of these establishments were told to Speak Easy about their existence. and also law enforcement officer called them that because patrons would speak quietly while in side so as not to be found by the police.

As for the Providencia Speakeasy, I will not be so quiet.

The Speakeasy is one of the company’s limited edition releases and is expressed in a (6 x 46) corona vitola that is hand crafted at the Flor de San Luis factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The company describes the blend as:

  • Wrapper – San Andres
  • Binder – Nicaraguan
  • Filler – Nicaraguan

The Speakeasy is available in singles with an MSRP of $9.99/cigar.

Pre-Light Examination

The Providencia Cigars Speakeasy is a slightly rugged looking cigar that sports a toothy, dark brown wrapper taht has a some noticeable veins and few bumps along the barrel. The cigar is fairly solid to the touch and is finshed with a closed foot. A triple cap completes the presentation.

A single band adorns the cigar that uses some of the original color motif of the the company’s introductory cigars form a number of years ago. The Logo is proudly presented on top with the word SPEAKEASY printed boldly below in a kind of art deco look.

Running the Providencia Speakeasy along the nose, I picked up a mildly pungent barrel along with a natural tobacco sweetness off the closed foot.

I sliced the cap straight across the shoulder and proceeded to give the corona a some cold draw puffs that I found to be a tad open and offered a pleasant mix of spice and bread notes.

Using my single flame torch, I gently warmed the foot and drew in the first puffs of spicy smoke to start the journey. Follow along as I burn this Speakeasy to the ground (ash).

Final Analysis

The Providencia Cigars Speakeasy Corona was a pleasant 1 hour smoke that offered a medium level of complexity in flavors and aromas. I found the burn to be quite nice with just a mild jag in the second half and flat burn cone once the ash fell. This is one I would grab a fiver of if you can locate them. They are normally available on the company’s shop page on their website here, but I notice as of this writing they are currently out of stock. I rate this a 92.

Point Deductions: (-1) Flat Burn Cone; (-1) Mild jag in burn in second half
