Zach Riley is back in the reviewing seat again, after some long work weeks, and today we offer his take of the Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2017 cigar. But before we get there here is a little background on the latest installment of this highly sought after and limited edition cigar.
This years blend boasts an Ecuadorian habano maduro wrapper and the full blend is described as:
- Wrapper – Ecuadorian habano maduro
- Binder – Nicaraguan
- Filler – Nicaraguan
There are four vitolas in this years release and each are packaged in 24-count boxes except for the 5.5 x 54 which is only available in the a four count sampler pack with the other vitolas:
- LC46 – 5 5/8 x 46 (MSRP $9.75)
- LC50 – 5 x 50 (MSRP $10.75)
- LC52 – 6 x 52 (MSRP $11.75)
- 5.5 x 54 (MSRP $9.70)
As with past years Las Calaveras, this 2017 is manufactured at My Father Cigars S.A. As a fun note, there was only 134,400 of these cigars made and when they are gone – that’s it. Well after this review I know there is only 134,399 left at best.

Cold Draw: In the cold draw I am getting wonderful coffee notes, hints of hay, and also some leather notes.
First Third: In this initial light I got a huge amount of spice! I also got a wonderful earthy note mixed with some dark walnuts. I am getting dark espresso note, some hickory, and almost like a smoked BBQ type flavor through the nose. Very exotic, but I love it. Stay tuned while I smoke this Las Calaveras 2017 down and I’ll be back with the second third.
Second Third: The second third of the Las Calaveras 2017 has changed a good bit. The spice is still there, but not nearly as immense as before. The flavor profile is similar, but also different in a way. Here are the notes I’m getting; dark woody flavor, some dark cocoa, and some nice espresso notes with a dash of heavy cream with it. Through the nose I am getting a black pepper spice, and the heavy cream espresso turned to a black espresso note. Back in a bit with the finish.

Finish/Final Third: The final third of the Las Calaveras 2017 has changed yet again. Spice has basically disappeared, and the flavor profile is much lighter. The notes I am getting are: creaminess, almost a floral note, and a light sweetness. It is really nice. Through the nose I am getting a white pepper spice, still a heavy creaminess, and a wonderful woody flavor.

Overview: Overall the Las Calaveras 2017 Edition by Crowned Heads was an excellent smoke. It had a fantastic flavor, wonderful aroma, and a stupendous burn throughout the entire smoke. I could’ve done this much earlier, but since this cigar is getting harder and harder to find in a local B&M I thought why not go ahead and do it now.
