As I have noted in past news, 2018 is going to be the year of the lancero, at first I thought it was just raining lanceros, but now I think it is a downpour as more cigar brands are filling out the portfolios of their most popular blends with the long-lost lancero vitola.
The latest to join the party is Nick Melillo AKA “nickragua” and his Foundation Cigars Company. The company has announced they will be releasing a Lancero Vitola of the highly acclaimed and award-winning Wise Man Maduro. The Wise Man Maduro garnered numerous Cigar of the Year awards in 2017 including #1 Boutique Cigar on StogiePress.com.
The Lancero line extension will weigh in at 7.5 x 40 and will be the sixth vitola in the line that was introduced last year.
Packaged in 13-count boxes, and retailing for $13.00/cigar, the Wise Man Maduro Lancero will be a limited production of only 500 boxes for the first production.
The blend will be the same as the original which is described as:
- Wrapper: Mexican San Andreas wrapper.
- Binder: Nicaraguan Corojo 99 from Jalapa
- Filler: A blend of Criollo 98 and Corojo 99 from Esteli and Jalapa
In a press release, Nick notes:
“I was inspired by the reputation of the Lancero format, known for an appeal that tends to run deeper into the cigar connoisseur realm, to use an artistic rendering of El Güegüense, also known as Macho Raton, as the central figure on our 13count box…
As this deeper story goes, El Güegüense traveled between the different colonial territories of Mexico and Central America in order to sell his goods. Accompanied by his sons, Don Forisco (his right hand) and Don Ambrosio (his detractor), they, and four mules (machos), ‘Machomoto, Macho-viejo, Macho-Mohino and Macho-guajaqueno were used for his heavy work, and symbolized how the indigenous population was being treated by the Spanish colonizers.””
