Lounge Review: Black Dog Cigar Box – Stuart Florida

The other week I had the pleasure of visiting the Black Dog Cigar Box shop and lounge in Stuart, FL. I was there for a Southern Draw Cigars event and I have to say the shop was packed as both Robert and Sharon Holt from Southern Draw were in attendance, which is a rare sighting. Maybe they all came out to see Sharon.

The shop is located in a small strip mall on the east side of Federal Highway at 3343 SE Federal Hwy, Stuart, FL – just a short drive from the I-95 Stuart Florida exit. Jeff, Dianne and Herb bought the business 7 years ago. It had already served Stuart for over 30 years. Based on the attendance the night I was there, I would say this was a good buy.

The Humidor

As you enter the lounge, you can’t help but notice the large walk-in humidor that is stocked full of many large brands and the most popular boutique cigar brands. This is one of the larger humidors in the area and I would say you should have no problem finding a cigar that meets your palate. In case you need assistance, the staff is well educated in tobacco and will be more than happy to fit a cigar to your needs.

House Blends

The shop has their own house brand of cigars, which I understand move very well, and are priced at a wallet comfortable cost. The are a few different blends to choose from, including a Golf Collection and the shop favorite “Black Dog” which comes in 5 different wrappers:

  • Habano
  • Sumatra
  • Brazilian Maduro
  • Ecuadorian Shade Connecticut
  • Criollo 99

The shop notes:

“Every leaf is fermented for TWO years and every cigar is rolled in the traditional Cuban style of “entubado” which is tubing. Instead of bunching and pressing the filler, each filler leaf is rolled into an individual tube and then pulled together to create three air channels which deliver an effortless draw. This also allows for a better box press and reduces the amount of combustion. This combination provides an effortless draw as well as a cooler, slower and straighter burn. The BLACK DOG cigar refuses to burn hot.“

Ample Seating and Bar

The shop has a large seating area in the front, with comfortable black leather chairs nicely separated with tables in between for holding ashtrays to share. There is a small beer and wine bar in the back of the shop with seating for about 8 people and offers a small but excellent choice of craft beers including some of Florida’s own, Cigar City Brewery, craft. Try the Maduro Brown Ale, it is one of my favorites to pair with a bold cigar like the Southern Draw Kudzu.

In addition to the large selection of cigars, the Black Dog Cigar Box carries a nice line of pipes and pipe tobacco for those who enjoy pipe smoking and also a select line of accessories.

Walking out a side door at the end of the bar, there is an outdoor seating patio that is partially covered, in the event of sudden rain storms, which are common in Florida during the summer. The shop is also dog friendly, which was good because I had my pal Ziggy with me during the visit and he enjoyed the company as much, if not more, than I did.

Overall I found the Black Dog Cigar Box – Stuart Florida warm and friendly, with an educated staff. The shop is professionally run, clean, and welcoming to all who visit. The ventilation was spot on, even with the crowd that was in attendance the evening I was there.

One of the unique qualities of this fine lounge is their 100% Cigar Satisfaction. The shop will replace any cigar that does not meet your expectations even if you bought it from one of their competitors. Now that is customer service and winning you over as a patron!!
