Black Chazaro Black Cigar Review – Viva la Mexico

Late last month I introduced you to the Black Chazaro cigar brand by way of the review of their Black Chazaro Habano cigar introduction. Today I have the pleasure of reviewing the second cigar in their line up – the Black Chazaro Black.

This cigar is a 100% Mexican San Andres puro. The complete blend is described as:

  • Wrapper – San Andres Negro
  • Binder – San Andres Negro
  • Filler – San Andres Negro

All leaf is grown on the company’s farm and are manufactured at the company’s modern factory, Real Fábrica de Tabaco, SA de CV located in the municipality of Ezequiel Montes,

The Black Chazaro Black is available in 3 vitolas and packaged in both 25-count bundles and 10-count black lacquer boxes:

  • Robusto – 5 1/16 x 50
  • Toro – 6.1 x 52
  • Torpedo – 6.1 x 52

For this review I sampled the Black Chazaro Black Robusto which I received from t he company at this years IPCPR for the purpose of reviewing in Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Black Chazaro Black has a dark brown, almost black, wrapper with some marbling and couple of noticeable veins.  It is rolled used the traditional Cuban Entubo method and finished with an expertly applied triple cap.

The band that adorns the cigar uses a black, white, and gold motif with the white word Black Chazaro printed a black background.

Black Chazaro BlackRunning it across the nose there are enticing notes of earth and hay on foot along with a delightful fermented sweetness along the shaft.

I used my Palio double blade cutter to open the cap and the cold draw delivered notes of BBQ hickory and light pepper through a perfect restriction.

  • Initial puffs started mild with little pepper and  a natural sweetness that engulfs the palate
  • A salt and pepper ash develops resting on a fairly thick char line
  • A savory spice note enters after a half-inch of burn
  • Smoke volume opens after an inch
  • A touch of dry leather adds to the profile
  • The smoke is incredibly smooth at this point
  • Meaty and roasted oak notes add to the profile
  • Fruit notes start to develop – I  expect this is from the San Andres and this is a Puro!
  • Ash fell after first third with a flat and centered cone
  • Spicy black cherry notes wake up the palate
  • Thick and creamy smoke
  • Dry cocoa evolves and mixes well with the cherry
  • A sweet and succulent aroma fills the air midway through the journey
  • Burn is well-behaved
  • Coffee notes enter
  • Peppery spice in the retro-hale appears at the end of the second third
  • A salted butter note joins the spice
  • Pepper ratchets up in the final third
  • Peanut lingers on the palate
  • Solid Medium Strength
  • Total Smoking time was just over one hour

Overall, the Black Chazaro Black was a pleasant smoking experience. Don’t be fooled or shy away from the dark look of this cigar. The fact that it is a San Andres puro actually brings delectable flavor and the aging of the leaf tones down the strength and pepper. As I mentioned, in the review of the Black Chazaro Habana, this is a company that you may never heard, but they are starting to appear in a number of shops across the USA.
