Cigar Review: Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Torpedo – Rated 98

The year 2022 marked 30 years since the founding of Perdomo Cigars. To celebrate that major milestone, the company released a special anniversary line of cigars that includes three blends:

  • Ecuadorian Connecticut
  • Nicaraguan maduro
  • Nicaraguan sungrown.

All three are expressed in 5 different box pressed vitolas and use Nicaraguan fillers and binders. The cigar started to ship to stores in November.

As for the company itself, it all started 30 years ago with the founding of Nicks Cigars in Miami and the Perdomo brand has grown into a household name for cigar enthusiasts worldwide. The company has its own factory in Nicaragua along with family farms. They even make their own boxes. From a small operation in the early 90’s to one of the largest and noticeable brands on the market today, the Perdomo journey is one that any new cigar brand would dream of having.

During the 30th Anniversary debut at the 2023 PCA trade show, Nick Perdomo Jr. noted:

“The 30th Anniversary encapsulates not only the essence of our team’s dedication to the finest quality and craftsmanship, but it also represents our longstanding commitment to our cherished patrons.”

The blend of the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown is described as:

  • Wrapper – Nicaraguan Sun Grown
  • Binder – Nicaraguan
  • Filler – Nicaraguan

The wrapper has been aged using the company’s decades old, barrel aging process.

As noted, they are expressed in 5 box-pressed vitolas and come packaged in 30-count boxes:

  • Box-Pressed Robusto (5 x 54) – MSRP $12.00
  • Box-Pressed Epicure (6 x 54) – MSRP $12.50
  • Box-Pressed Churchill (7 x 54) – MSRP $13.00
  • Box-Pressed Gordo (6 x 60) – MSRP $13.50
  • Box-Pressed Torpedo (7 x 54) – MSRP $14.00

For this review I sampled 3 of the Box-Pressed Sun Grown Torpedos which I purchased from Smoke Inn for the purpose of reviewing on Stogie Press.

Pre-Light Examination

The Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Torpedo is a beautifully constructed cigar with its milk chocolate brown wrapper that is very light on veins and exhibits a light oily finish. The cigar has just the right give when gently pressed between the fingers. The torpedo cap has a longer taper than many on the market and highlights the excellent construction, at least from a viewing perspective.

The visual appearance is further enhanced on the shelf with the attractive red and gold band, which highlights the company’s logo in the center and the declaration of “1992 PERDOMO 2022” across the top. It also includes the phrase “TREINTA AÑOS” which means Thirty Years. The bottom of the band declares this as the 30th ANNIVERSARY.

Running the cigar along the nose, I picked up mild baking spice notes along the barrel and some pepper, malt, and fruity jam notes off the foot. Nice pre-light introduction.

I sliced the pointy cap using my double blade cutter right at a 45-degree angle and gave the cigar some cold draw puffs that were right on with restriction and offered a subtle pepper cracker note.

Using my single fan flame Xikar torch, I warmed the foot to an even orange glow and drew in the first puffs of enticing cracker and almond notes to start the journey. Follow along as I burn this one to ash.

Final Analysis

The Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Torpedo is exactly what I expect from a milestone cigar checking all the boxes for flavor, aroma, and burn. The journey commences with a delightful interplay of toasted cracker and almond nut flavors. A smooth retro-hale introduces a mild pepper note, complementing the experience. The air is filling with the scent of maple syrup intertwined with nutty fragrances. The almond notes grow pleasantly prominent in the initial phase, while hints of cinnamon spice dance on the palate. Transitioning, the aroma evolves into a subtle touch of chocolate. As the cigar progresses, the cinnamon notes gain intensity alongside a gradual increase in overall strength. Tangy citrus notes make a refreshing entrance, adding a delightful dimension to the profile.

The lengthy ash eventually drops, revealing a well-formed and established burn cone. Midway through, natural tobacco sweetness intertwines with hints of fruit. Deep into the second phase, a faint undertone of cocoa powder adds additional dimension to the already complex profile. The finale unfolds with a final touch of added spice, rounding off this amazing journey. I have to say, the ash fell just once though the experience. This is by far a box buy. Just note that the strength does inch up on you so smoke this after eating a meal. I rate this a solid 98.

Point Deductions: NONE
